MONTREAL ? Should Canada become the 51st American state? Four out of 10 Americans answered "sure" in a recent poll conducted by Leger Marketing of Montreal.

While 38 per cent of respondents said they would be "in favour of Canada being annexed to the United States," 49 per cent disagreed. Another 13 per cent said they did not know or refused to answer.

But those who follow Canada-U.S. relations closely said Canadians should not panic.

"I wouldn't worry about the army coming," said Christopher Sands, director of the Canada Project for the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C.

"I don't think there's any manifest-destiny thinking much in the United States anymore. People don't want to just acquire territory."

Sands said he was somewhat puzzled by the "high minority" of Americans who said Canada should be annexed. However, he speculated the responses were an indication of goodwill and welcome towards Canadians should the government ever decide on its own that it wants to join the United States.

I agree with Sands. The comments were probably made in the spirit of "Sure, come join us you crazy Canucks!" instead of something more menacing. Kind of warms the heart. Happy Canadian Thankgiving to our American neighbours. :)

Don't worry, those poll numbers will be higher after the U.S. officially annexes Afghanistan and Iraq first.

That's what they want you to think.

I think Canada's going to get stronger in a influential way.

A lot of their laws are lax compared to ours, and they are more free-thinking than the US and more peaceful. Who do you see picking a fight with Canada all the time or pointing fingers at them?

<----- Detroit, MI. (I can walk to Winsdor, Canada....over a bridge of course)

Nobody picks a fight with Canada because their southern neighbors don't take kindly to such things.

The US is a superpower, Canada gets to ride along behind us because they're our neighbors. Nothing wrong with that, but don't go comparing the world position of Canada to the US.

Who does everybody go crying to when they can't take care of themselves? The US.
Who does everybody blame when anything goes wrong? The US.

Part of being where we are.

And on a related theme: a group of businessmen offered to buy Baja from Mexico. Mexico said no.

Why would we want Canada? We already have Montana and Alaska if we want to vacation or live in complete desolation.

I say just annex British Columbia and the Yukon territory so that we can drive to Alaska without going through another Country, leave the rest to fend for themselves, especially Quebec we don't need that problem.:D

We like Santa Claus and getting Christmas presents, too. But you don't see any of us trying to annex the North Pole!

Yes. Several times they tried, most recently in 1995, if I'm not mistaken. But the Supreme Court ruled it illegal after the referendum failed with something like 52% against seperating and 48% for seperating, so they have shut up for now.

Grade 10 Social Studies we learn all about the Quebec BS like how they claim they need to be recognized as a distinct society and should be permitted to do whatever they want to preserve the said society. Total BS.

The rest of the country would benefit if they had left.
