4-in-1 update problems, VIA chipset

Setup: MVP motherboard, VIA chipset, k6 III-450.
I did an update a few days ago, and right after it the PC would not boot. Beep error code sounded like a video card problem, so off we go with a Diamond Stealth S540 II, out an old 8 mb card in, the machine boots.
Later I realize that none of my PCI cards are being recognized (sound, FireWire). Uninstalling, installing, swapping slots, no effect.
Another day later I find out that my parallel Zip is out too, havent tried connecting the printer directly yet.
So, is there a way to rectify the situation, or should I start shopping for a new motherboard?
