I chose not to go with the IV to totally knock me out so I'll be awake.

For anyone who has ever taken valium, will I be aware of what is going on around me and will I care or be nervous?

And I'm assuming the doctor applies numbing gell before the nerve block is injected?

Also... they say these teeth could be close to the nerves on the bottom, with all these injections, etc. is there anything to worry about?

When this is over, what should I expect immediately after? What about a day or two after?

EDIT: finished... pain is aweful

if you get a good surgeon, you'll be ok. if you get a crappy one, be ready for some pain. i had the same thing as you. i went in and got it out, and i didnt need to take any of the medication. although when they were taking it out, i could feel the cracking, and at some point i guess there wasnt enough novacaine so it hurt like hell... i had to raise my hand and let them know that it hurt.

good luck man, i hope you get a good surgeon.

<< What to expect? >>

Pain, blood, horrible dreams, and possibly even death.

Well, you never know...

I'm dreading the time i have to have my wisdom teeth removed. Apparently the teeth is lodged in the jawbone thus i'd need a major surgery to literally saw it off.

You should be fine. A good surgeon will do it so well chances are the only discomfort you'll feel is having to open your mouth wide for an extended period of time.

You're doing the exact same thing I did. When I had mine pulled I got the gas and the local. Be prepared for the first few minutes of pain. You're going to have to work with the dentist for a while before you get completely numb. Different parts of your mouth will need less and more painkillers.

If I were you, I'd get knocked out, no question. I'm surprised the doctor is letting you do this locally.

I had valium's big brother Versed when mine were taken out, and, well, it sort of spaces you. Versed, and probably Valium too in the right quantity, will give you temporary amnesia, i.e. you won't remember what you did when you were under the influence of the drug, though you'll be awake when you did it.

I assume the gell will be applied, but honestly, the pain from a couple shots per tooth won't be that bad compared to your recovery.

Immediately after I was finished, I slept for a number of hours. I swelled up not unlike a chipmunk with acorns in both cheeks. The really nasty part was: in the beginning, I couldn't open my mouth. Then the incisions became more swollen, and I couldn't shut my mouth :) You'll get some sort of opiate, and you'll probably need some of them.

Edit: some cases are, I understand, much worse than others. Impacted teeth are generally no fun, but a straight-up cut-and-pull is probably not so bad. Mine were in the middle verging on bad.

I don't mean to gross you out or turn you off it, but, well, it's not so fun if your teeth are impacted. Again, i'd recommend the IV sedation, but that's just me.

I had my wisdom teeth taken out without going under, and I have to concur with the "hope you get a good surgeon" vote.
I had them taken out two at a time, and the first surgeon was an absolute butcher. He broke one inside my mouth, pain, blood, him standing out top of me to yank them out, etc. Really sucked.
Less than a year later, I had the other two taken out by a different surgeon, who was a real pro. No pain, no mess, we were done before I knew it.
I'm exaggerating though, even when it's bad it really isn't that bad. I don't know why people go under for it (I think recovering from general anes. is worse). The thing to watch out for (I understand) is dry sockets. I've seen people who got those and they are very painful. Take your surgeon's advice to the letter on how to avoid those.
I've never taken valium, so I can't tell you what to expect from that.
Good luck.

Make sure that someone you know and trust drives you the dentist, waits until you are through and drives you home and someone stays with you. You'd be surprised how much of an effect Valium has on you.

Good idea?

I had one taken out under local, & it SUCKED. Did I feel pain? No. But I felt & heard a hell of a lot of tugging, cracking, popping, grinding, burning tooth, etc. Not to mention the blood & tooth scraps being vacuumed out, & the blood splatters on the cloth they put over me.

The other three were taken out under general, & it was MUCH better. You wake up with holes in your mouth, & get spared the details.

Just my 2¢, but I'd seriously reconsider the anesthetic.

It's a personal preference. The reason I think it's a good idea is because Kaiser wanted to charge me $95 to knock me out, also had to sign a consent form that in case anything goes wrong (like I flatline or die) that they are not held responsible ... plus I'd like to be awake just in case they hit a major nerve, vein, bone or rip out something they're not supposed do then my real would be to jump up out of the chair, scare the sh!t out of them while kicking and screaming.

I just don't like the idea of being knocked out period, unless it's brain surgery or something like that.

All I needed was:
Valium
Local anesthetic (to numb the gums, tongue, cheeks, etc.)
Laughing Gas
1 day to recover and
LOTS of gauze

Well, I've got a pretty rare disease against anesthesia, so I had to go under. I had an older doctor remove mine, and he didn't believe in stiches, he thought that would lead only to infection. He put ONE stich in both sides... effect? I stood over the sink for a dy and a half with my mouth open dripping blood. It looked like I was bleeding a lot more then I was. The cool thing was it didn;t hurt at all, and when it stopped bleeding, my jaw never experianced swelling or soreness like they tell you it will.

If he's on valium he really won't care, I had an arthoscope jammed in my shoulder while awake on the stuff. They even let me watch the surgery and it didn't even phase me. Valium is actually a good idea.

One more piece of advice, get & keep ice on it ASAP.

I put ice packs on both sides of my face & wrapped a belt around my head to keep them there. I looked like a damn moron, but I had no swelling whatsoever. Of course if you don't insist on posting on AT afterwards the belt might not be necessary.

But do use ice, & lots of it.

And listen to their advice when they say avoid straws, dry socket is a bitch.

I chose to be knocked out completely when I got my 4 wisdom teeth removed. When I came to, I was in less pain than after a usual dental filling.

Definitely use Valium, it's the greatest (legal) drug on the planet.

I barely remember the day I had my wisdom teeth extracted.

You should have taken the IV.

They stick you with the needle, say your name twice, the room spins, *BLACK*, then you wake up.

I'm confused. All of you say that you got the local and you were awake for the whole thing, however that's what I got, and I fell to sleep pretty quickly. Actually, I got gassed and then shot up with something in my arm, then I fell asleep. I definitely didn't get the IV drip because I was stupid and accidentally ate something before I went in. I woke up for a little bit and heard something but I fell right back to sleep. I could have gotten myself to the car afterwards just fine even though the nurse and my father insisted on helping me. I fell asleep for a couple of hours when I got home and when I woke up, I was fine. Not a whole lot of pain, just a bad taste from the blood. I looked normal even though I didn't attack solid food for a bit. All of my friends were mad at me because I made it through so effortlessly. Good luck. :)

wow... this pain is intense - the meds they gave me aren't even dulling it

the actual surgery was good and I was fine until the nerve block wore off

I'm in pain city right now

If I recall right from business law you can't sign away your unalienable rights - regardless you could still sue.

I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth taken out, trust me you do not want to be awake for the entire 45 minutes that they are working on your mouth.

ICE, ICE, ICE and don't take the vicodin if you get queasy easily, just take tylenol.

The Valium? Well for about an hour I couldn't walk or structure an intelligable sentence. Then after that I was just tired.

Now I have a ton of pain and these pills wear off way to quick but you can't take another one for so many more hours. This is really a problem here...
