4 GB SD card only reads as 979MB

your flash reader isn't new enough to read all 4GB of it? maybe the SD card is defective and you got ripped off on 3GB of it?

been looking around and it must be the reader. If I go to bestbuy/CC, etc, will the ones they have there be compatible?

Where did you buy the card from?

If it's a new card, you could try plugging it into a digital camera that uses SD and see how much capacity it shows.

It's either that or it's a counterfeit.

How old is your flash reader? If it predates the availability of 4GB cards by a large margin, it may not understand how to read a 4GB card.

There are some counterfeit cards out there that are like 1GB cards that are fdisked to appear as 4GB to people who aren't good with computers.

i bought it new from newegg, so i can only assume its not fake. I bought it for a digital picture frame that we got for xmas, but that wont read it at all. its a weird situation, i'm sending it back to newegg for a 2 gb that i know everything will read. thanks for the help

That's the thing with the 'stupid' flash memory types: If a reader wasn't built to read/write a specific size memory card, it just won't be able to.

PCMCIA and CompactFlash are the only types of flash memory with a built-in controller that allows them to be used with older readers. Memory Stick, Secure Digital, SmartMedia, they all talk to the flash chip directly. No support == no go.
