4 core or 8 core

I stoped my order for a 2.66 mac pro and will reoder one aftr I gt credit for it.
I what to have a good base to start with so that is whay I moved to the 8 core one.
Problem is I am not sure I can afford the 2.66 one and will need to step down to start with to the 2.26 one.
Will the be much of a difrence will runing the mac O.S. and windows 7 Pro with difrent speeds of thes 2 CPU's ?

I figured that have two I7 2.26cpu's would be better than having one 2.66.
This also gave me the chance to buy 2 2.93 or 2.66 intel I7's later on.

I am not going to be gaming much anymore seems most games have move to consel's anyway othe than online Rpg's and getting to were i just dont have the time to devote to online games anyway.
So I will be moslty taking picks of my grandson and vidies.
Will be playing Call of duty 4 onle when i have to spend time in the house do to rain or whne i have to prep myself for upcoming night shift.

You'd probably be fine with a dual core. Quad core is plenty for sure, 8 core is overkill IMO.

With the Xeons in the Mac Pro, the Quad Core is a simulated Octo Core. It has hyperthreading.

K thanks I will do have to consider this over then, I just want to be sure that when i get the foundation it will be what I want and can expand if I find a need to.
Seems things are starting to be coded more for multi threading.

when I installed win7 on my PC and didn't over clock it it showed the cpu to be like a score of a 4 on the windows bench mark after messing around in the bios for a week I seem to be able to get it stabel wit a score of 7.6 for cpu calcutalitions and 7.9 on the memory.

Two things I will have to give up is a printer fax and a 24" refubished apple display if I get the 8 Core one. But displayes seem to get better all the time and I am not all that sure that there displays are worth the money.

Curently have a 24 inch westinghouse display that can get me by till I find a better one.
And should be abel to find a good Printer/scaner/fax on sale later on.

The apple LED display is really quite gorgeous. A monitor is something I keep for a very long time and buy a good one only every 4 years or so. Get a good one, make it last.

If all you're going to do is edit a little bit of video and pictures, you'd be better served with a faster quad than a slower octocore machine. I just built up a rig to do just those sorts of things for my sister and just put the fastest dualie in there I could while staying in budget.

Have you thought about maybe the 24" iMacs? I looked at them yesterday when I was in the store and the displays on those things are really, really nice.

I have a I7 2.67 CPU in my PC so I would only need to buy another one from the egg to get from 2.26 to 2.67 dont now if i will see much difrence between these 2 cpu's though.

Win7 pro will be on a difrent drive, for when I dicde to play a game or have the time to.

Yes video editing wont be what it is only for but I do have a back load of VHS tapes to trasfer to DVD if it isnt already to late. I have to find the right thing for that I belive there is a dvice I can hook up my vcr too then to the mac and transfer not only the home vidieo taps but all the Disney movies my Wife bought for my children that would be great for my Grasndson.

For the cost though I am realy wondering if I should just stick to one CPU being that I am not a Profesinal with taking pictures or vidieo.

The Mac Pro uses Xeon processors, and dropping your own into it is not for the faint of heart.

They are using the I7 Nehalem CPU's now. It says Xeon until you click on more details Screen

Yes they are, but they aren't Desktop Nehalems they are Xeon (Server-Class) CPUs.

Also - From my research when I was looking to get a Mac Pro. The Single CPU version ships with just a single CPU socket and 4 Dimm slots.

This is relative...

I use a 64 core 2.66 ghz cluster for my work. It's not fast enough.

That is why I may get this Dell 2480WFP monitor instead of the cinema display not sure how much difrence there will be but with this I can plug in a xbox or a PS3 into it and I get a 3 year warranty with out paying extra.

I have the Dell 2407WFP (the 2007 model of the 24" screen) and it is absolutely gorgeous. Out of the box, colors are very accurate and the panel is an 8-bit display, so the color gamut is true and wide. I would not hesitate to save ~$400 by suggesting this display over the the 24" Apple Cinema LED-based one. Unless you have money to spend, the Dell Ultra Sharp series is where it's at.

On that note, the 270MHz you're gaining by getting the faster CPU is negligible and I would advise against that upgrade if it's more than $75. I would put that money towards a SSD drive, extra storage, extra RAM (other than from Apple because they over-charge) or just save it for a rainy day.
