My PC: Intel Core i5 3570K @ 3.40GHz on an ASUS P8Z77-V LX (LGA1155) running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit SP1. I have 2 spinning internal HDs and one external USB HD.

But no SSD. Finally, now I want to install a budget SATA SSD for my new boot drive.

After some homework I've come up with 4 choices:
  • Samsung 850 EVO 250GB for $90, a little concerned about the small size
  • PNY CS1311 480GB for $120
  • OCZ Trion 150 480GB for $116
  • Crucial MX300 525GB for $112
Happy to hear any comments and suggestions, will likely wait a week before buying.

The 850 Evo is good, but size trumps per-capacity performance for SATA SSDs. Go for one of the larger ones. I've read good things about all three, particularly the Trion 150 and MX300. I don't think you can go wrong with either of the three, though.

Thanks gents, yah the Samsung's name brand premium doesn't quite cut my mustard when I'm looking at 80% of the cost for half the capacity.

Samsung or Crucial would be my preference from that list.

But look at the ADATA SP550, and a newer model. I'm using one in my new Skylake until I can pick the right M.2 NVMe drive. I have a couple of those ADATAs, because they seemed like a good bet after I got the first of the two.

Now I've added Adata's 512GB SU800 3D Nand to my list, to compete with 3D Crucial and yes Samsung. For $133 (130 at the egg). Their 2D is $120. The Crucial has gone up from 112 to 129 (123 at b&h) and the OCZ has gone from 116 to 121 - just since yesterday. Hmm, 112 was sounding good, but 123 or 130 not so good. Funny about that when prices cross a psych threshold.

Btw the local shop only supplies Samsung at local premium retail, but then from my list chose Crucial.

Well for now it's over. I just ordered a Transcend 480gb on a one-day (today) sale at amz, for $87 !! I'm more sensitive to price/utility than insistent on the fastest. That's the way I buy a car too.

$87 - Transcend 480 GB TLC SATA III 6Gb/s 2.5" SSD

Thanks again gents. Honestly I only looked at the price, 87 vs 123 Crucial, and the Amz buyer reviews. I'd tired of looking at very technical reviews with comparative read/write scores. Forty bucks is big on my income and facing the gaping maw of the future. Now, the KitGuru review is educational, but maybe the drive will perform better in the states?;)
