I can somewhat make out the head and it looks like some sort of gator but the body is to odd shaped it looks like to be one.

Its just an odd angle and a poor shot. Its about 10-15 feet away.

They are beyond scared of people. The next step closer I took it was back in the water.

Pretty cool, is 4-5 feet standard for a young alligator? Seems kind of big to me, but I don't really know anything about alligators.

That's pretty cool. I went to Disney World a few years ago, and was hoping to see a gator somewhere; No luck :^( I did see plenty of armadillos though, and that made up for it a little bit :^)

We usually don't see many under 3 feet as I suppose they stay close to the mom around that age, but 4-5 is usually a young one. The biggest ones we usually get right around our house are 7-8 feet, though i've seen a few that I would guess are quite a bit larger (though I didn't get close enough to check). I think the populated environment right around here keeps them a bit smaller as we keep building over their habitat (just speculation).
EDIT: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alligator
Looks like 13 feet is the average size for a full grown adult, but as I noted, I don't think they get that big right around here, or if they do, they are good at hiding.
