What are we looking at?

I can somewhat make out the head and it looks like some sort of gator but the body is to odd shaped it looks like to be one.

Its just an odd angle and a poor shot. Its about 10-15 feet away.

Be a man next time and get closer so we can actually see it.

They are beyond scared of people. The next step closer I took it was back in the water.

Nope, thats all gator, its upper body is turned towards the water while the tail is pretty perpendicular to where I was standing.

Pretty cool, is 4-5 feet standard for a young alligator? Seems kind of big to me, but I don't really know anything about alligators.

That's pretty cool. I went to Disney World a few years ago, and was hoping to see a gator somewhere; No luck :^( I did see plenty of armadillos though, and that made up for it a little bit :^)

We usually don't see many under 3 feet as I suppose they stay close to the mom around that age, but 4-5 is usually a young one. The biggest ones we usually get right around our house are 7-8 feet, though i've seen a few that I would guess are quite a bit larger (though I didn't get close enough to check). I think the populated environment right around here keeps them a bit smaller as we keep building over their habitat (just speculation).

EDIT: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alligator

Looks like 13 feet is the average size for a full grown adult, but as I noted, I don't think they get that big right around here, or if they do, they are good at hiding.

I've never seen any in the parks themselves, but I've seen quite a few at Disney's Coranado Springs resort when I was there visiting a friend.

I didn't expect to see any in the park, but I had some good drive time to and from(as a bus passenger). I bet the stormwater ponds, and cattail patches hadn't seen that much attention in awhile :^D

ah, you're down there.

My pops works for Guana River state park outside of Jax. He's been keeping track of a ~10 foot male for the last 3 years or so. It tends to be the birthing season when I visit, so I always see babies, tons of lady gators, and the big ass male hanging out when I'm down there.
He lives on a canal, too. plenty of gators hanging out in the area. Still hasn't lost his mini dachtsun (knock on wood...)

that's what you get for living on what should be swamp land. 😉

here, i get the random Text in my yard.

actually, more like deer, skunks, coyotes, turkeys, rabbits, and squirrels.

Here's about an 8 foot one I saw last time I went fishing. I've seen some that were 13+ feet before.

The crazy thing is that I've seen people kayaking there.
