4.0 ghz isnt that hard with a xp-120 using the 6 series.

The 6 series are not hot even though ignornant people keep saying they are without knowing.

4.4 isnt that hard on phase.

As for air, you will have to wait.
I think you are missing the point, who cares.. With the X2 blowing the 840EE extreme out of the water on every benchmark, why would you want anything else ? And if you can't afford that, the Venice/SanDiego at 4000+ or OC'ed slower speeds blows every single core out of the water at anywhere close to the same price point.

I know this, im just trying to answer the OPs question.

4.0 is reachable on air.
4.4 is reachable on phase.

(6 series)

I hadn't heard of the X2 before, that does indeed look like something to look forward to. Instead of googling up more info about it (i've already checked it out some), any idea when it will be out and will it cost a crapload of cash? You guys are faster than google most of the time anyways 😛

I'm a gamer for the most part, so that comes first.

Hehe,
Does two P4 2.8 running in SMP count? LOL

Yeah, it get's worse. I have two of them and 4 big drives running in RAID5. 😀

Nothing is overclocked..............yet. 😉

If you are a gamer, then your biggest problem may be that 9800pro, its a little out-dated. The X2 should be out May31st, its on a 939 pin platform, and a little spendy, and games won't utilize it for the most part. Your 3000+ should do nicely right now with a better video card.

Whats the rush? A64 3000+ overclocked to A64 3500+ speeds will be faster than P4 3.8ghz 670 $850 CPU today. What are you waiting for?

As has been mentioned the 9800Pro is about 2x slower than anything high-end out there. Get $290 6800GT. 512mb extra is beneficial too.

Got a 6800GT, hardly any improvement over my 9800 Pro, so i sold it. Though it may have been a problem with the card, i think it was probably because of my system. Not here to discuss that though, you can read my other previous threads if you're curious. My Mobo doesn't like more than one stick of ram.

power supply ????? What do you have, brand and model number.

Edit: I just read several of your other threads. It sounds to me like some serious problems with the system. I would try another power supply even though you have an Enermax420 (what you said in another thread.) Borrow a good Antec 430 true power or better. With all the problems you have, you either have a bad mobo or PSU I think..... And have you thought about a re-format/fresh install ?

Yeah i've also come to think it's a PSU or Mobo problem, i'm leaning toward the Mobo. I've been putting off formating and reinstalling XP because it'd be a huge pain in the arse, at least that's what i think. After i upgrade, if th problem still persists, then only then i will re-format and reinstall XP, that's the plan for now anyways.

Anyways I might jump on the X2 if i can, what are the drawbacks though? Would i see a big jump in performance? Is it too early to ask these questions? 😛

Sorry to tell you, you're not getting 4.4GHz on air using a Pentium 4.

The process is quite good right now, and people are hitting 4GHz pretty easily. The problem lies in cooling it.

You need light water to hit 4.4GHz. Look at the ThermalTake BigWater Kit if you want a cheap watercooling solution.

Using chilled water or phase, 4.5GHz+ is pretty normal for a 6xx series.

You will have to re-format for any upgrade unless you stay with the same mobo. I would suggest doing that now, before you decide you need to upgrade, its not that hard, 2 hours work tops. The X2 won't help gaming much, but multitasking and encoding it will help a LOT.

Well, i haven't liked my A64 system since i got it, but it's probably a different problem like ram or mobo anyways, perhaps i'll just look forward to a 3ghz a64...those around yet? 😛

Socket 754, no wonder. The 939s are where it's at....

X2's come out may 31st. They aren't that much more expensive than their single-core equivalents, considering you get another cpu core. If overclocked, you can get FX-57 performance in Doom 3, and yet u can be running spybot, windows media player, and Norton antivirus in the backround without any lag whatsoever.

Sounds good but are we talking like $500+ for the X2 alone? Or is the price sort of unknown now?

around $500 give or take a few. Some sites allow u to preorder X2's already. (Sparco and I think Monarch) Wait for next-gen cards to come out, so the prices drop.

I think all intel has planed for Cedarmill is up to 3.8 ghz at least thats what i have gathered from the web.

I've heard 4ghz, not that thats exactly a huge leap, but they couldn't do it with prescott. If it ends up doing better than they thought, they will probably keep bumping up the clock speed.
