I am considering a LCD monitor. It seems that most (if not all) in the 17-19" range have a native resolution of 1280x1024 which is not the 4:3 aspect ration that I am used to, or inline with most pc graphics. It would seem that images rendered would not appear correct at this resolution. What are your experiances with making this switch.

The graphical distortion only occurs when you use a resolution of one aspect ratio (e.g. 4:3) on a monitor designed for another (e.g. a 5:4 LCD). The reverse is also true (using resolutions for 5:4 LCDs such as 1280*1024 on 4:3 CRTs). I don't know how people can stand to do this - perhaps they've just been desensitized to the distortion.

In other words, using a 5:4 resolution (1280x1023) on a 5:4 LCD (e.g. all LCDs in the 17 to 19 inch range, except for widescreen models) would work perfectly. :)

you are 100% correct.
for proper desktop ratio youll need to run 1280x1024.
for gaming it wont be noticable if you run a smaller res tho.

LCDs also tend to blur the image if you use them in a non-native resolution.

Thanks for all your replies. After thinking it over, I decided to save my money and not get an LCD. The reasons are :

1. Being forced to run at 1280x1024 to have a proper AR
2. Bluring that occurs at non-native resolutions on any but the very best LCDs
3. Games running at 1280x1024 will tax my poor Geforce4 4400.
4. Color gradients just seem smoother on CRTs.

Again, thanks for your help everyone.
