4.2 Surround setup questions?

Could someone tell me what would be involved in doing a surround sound setup using 2 sets of speakers + subwoofers. Like just buying 2 off the shelf boxes of 2.1 speakers. Do you think I could use a receiver to control volume on both simultaneously? And would that allow for legitimate surround sound reproduction? (Proper channels activating on que, like say in a movie or video game).

I don't have any experience with surround, so any help would be appreciated.

Not sure about the question but if you are asking about hooking up 2-2.1's to the Rig then as long as you have speaker inputs for the front and rear then there is no problems as the Sub has a built in Xover and each set has a mini jack, from there the Soundcards software should take over. (balance F&R, volume, and EQ)

A friend of mine did this for a while on his computer. It sounded really nice with all the bass from 2 subs, but he had to move the windows slider to adjust the speakers as one unit. This would be easier with a keyboard that supports windows volume control. Otherwise you'd have to turn the volume up on one, then the other, and try to have the levels match. Most 2.1 setups have analog "pre-amp" inputs in the form of 1/8" minijacks. If your receiver supports preamp outputs (not all do) then you should be ok to use the receiver to change the volume on your "4.2" setup.

yea, you need a reciever to drive the 2 subs simotaneously. can be done without much trouble. i did it once for fun, but i can hardly take the bass. in fact, one subwoofer at most times have too much bass, thats why my volume control has bass turned down to the second lowest notch.
