4.1 Speaker Setup and Onboard Sound

Is it possible to hook up a 4.1 speaker setup to onboard sound on a mobo that just has the standard Line in, Line out, and Microphone connectors using the Line in and Line out jacks?

Yes, almost all multi-channel onboard sound codecs do this - it does depend on the type of codec that is used though (C-media 9738, Realtek ALC650, SoundMax etc...) and the driver setup. For 4 channel the Line In becomes the rear out and for 5.1 channel, the Microphone In becomes the Centre/ LFE.
