Is it possible to run 2.1 speakers on the front channel and 2 back speakers through a stereo on the back channel and get 4.1 sound, or only stereo X 2? My mb does not support 4.1 sound and can not test it out.

thanks

You could feed the line out to your stereo but it won't be true 4.1, just a copy of your original stereo.

If the motherboard doesn't support 4-channel, then you wouldn't have a rear speaker jack in the first place.

Connecting the rear channel to a stereo and having the stereo output the sound should work just fine, just set the stereo to use the line-in for the source. If the motherboard is outputting in 4 channel mode, you'll get 4 channel output. If the audio you're playing is stereo, you may or may not get output to the rear speakers -- some sound cards and motherboards won't output to the rear port unless you're specifically playing something with a rear track.

What board is it?

I have an Asus P4P800 mb. When I hooked up the speakers for the stereo in the back speaker plugs, it gave me an option for Quadraphonic, which just sounded like stereo X 2, with a mixer option. The Asus manuel states the mb has 6 channel sound and 5.1 sound, but they do not mention 4.1 surround sound. So anyways I am upgrading to an Audigy 2 oem soon and am also looking at speakers. Now the Altec 4100's are very cheap now, but I would rather buy the Altec 621 and use my stereo speakers for a back channel when gaming or movies. I prefer just stereo sound for music and I understand the 621 has pretty decent sound for music.

Did i mention that cost is a concern?

Oops, I found some old posts and got it working in NSF hot pursuit 2. Works well.
