3x WD6400AAKS in raid vs single 150gb raptor and single WD6400AAKS

I'm replacing all the storage devices in my pc. I'm debating between three WD6400AAKS in raid or getting a single 150gb raptor for games and what not, with one WD6400AAKS for storage.

3x WD6400AAKS in raid = $240
1x WD6400AAKS and 150gb raptor = $255

How would the performance compare between the single raptor and the drives in raid?

Any other suggestions?

AFAIK, RAID really doesn't do that much, so the Raptor would be faster. Unless you need the storage space or parity that RAID/more drives would provide.

The 640's without a doubt in my mind.

I have 2 150 Raptors in RAID 0 and the humming is annoying even over the db of my fans. It does boot faster than my single Raptor in my 8400 machine but the performance delta is meh.

get the 640's but dont stick em in raid, run one for windows+apps, and the other 2 for pure storage.

If you do run RAID, get a real RAID card. Onboard RAID 0/1 is fine but more performance can be had with a true card. Also don't bother with onboard RAID5, it's a joke. If you don't care about RAID, a single 640 for the OS and the two for storage is a great way to go (as TC91 stated).

Oh, dammit, you have the 150GB raptor. I thought you had a velociraptor. So now I recommend getting the three 6400AAKS and not putting them in RAID.

I haven't bought anything yet, but it looks like I'll go with a raptor with two 640gb's in raid 1.
