I used a 3ware 7000-2 card in my old rig and it still runs to this day. Nowadays though, I think the software RAID controllers and implementations on motherboards have caught up quite a bit. Current drives are also considerably faster and with PCI-E and SLI boards, there's fewer and fewer PCI slots available on mainboards.

You might be able to search around a bit for reviews to see if its worth it but nowadays you might see better performance overall by upgrading something else and just using the mainboard SATA ports and RAID controllers or even buying faster drives. I found a few reviews that compared my old card and some software controllers and they mirror'd my own benchmarks. I didn't bother to port my old array/card to my new rig though, 2x Raptors in JBOD is plenty fast enough for me and faster than my old RAID 0 as well.
