Newegg has the 3TB WD Red hard drives on sale for $139.99 after $30 off with promo code EMCNJJE28. This is the lowest I've seen this drives get. In fact, I bought five from Amazon when they went down to $150 a few weeks ago, which was itself a good deal. And so far my experience has been good. YMMV with Newegg's shipping, though. The deal ends tomorrow (1/16).

Looks like a good deal, but the description stresses that it's for NAS. Does anyone have any experience using these as a normal desktop drive? Does WD provide a utility to allow a conventional BIOS to see all 3 TB with Win7?

I use the 2 TB Red as a data drive in my desktop. No problems or issues and far superior to the 1.5 TB Green drive it replaced.

I was about to buy one, but now it's showing "Sold Out."

Oh well, it looks like HD prices are finally back to antediluvian status, so it will probably be on sale for even cheaper in a month or two.

Camelegg.com and Camelcamelcamel.com are your friends. ;)

And my experience with Amazon's packing of the hard drives was pretty good. They each were in molded plastic end-caps in individual cardboard boxes, lined up in a large box with air bags for padding. One box was a bit dented on the side, but I think that happened pre-shipping since the large box had no marks.

That was a great price - a real hot deal
I would have bought some at $189 - $199 except for the bad NE comments - comments that shouldnt be there for a NAS type drive. I mean thats why you buy the red drive - right?

Sounds like NE is using the same HDD packing box as Amazon now, tho might vary by what wherehouse it comes from

As far as seeing the whole drive all you have to do is format it as GPT either using diskpart or in diskmanager in Windows. Just right click the new drive and click the convert GPT option.
Disk part from cmd line:
diskpart
list disk
select disk X (the 3TB drive)
convert gpt

Fwiw when using the 3TB drive for DATA, converting to GPT is all you need for total to be seen by X64 O/S (not X86) drive either GPT or MBR. In other words an MBR Win 7 X64 HDD/SSD can read a full GPT mode >2.19TB drive
3TB base 10 is in use base 2 - 2794.39 MB

Amazon will also have these drives between $150/$160. Sad I missed this sale though, as I wanted to buy a few.
