any way to get it to boot normally? it's in an external enclosure and for the last day or 2 has been making a loud constant noise. powered it off and this morning it just clicks for a few seconds. nothing detected in windows.

warranty expired. checked seagates site and the drive isn't under warranty anymore.

besides, no way to get data back.

If the drive was clicking but you could still get data off it before you turned it off, that would have been the ideal action. Every drive I have had gave no advance warning before failure.

So to be in your situation, even a few hours to get data off is a precious chance. And you wasted it....

Every mistake is a learning opportunity. Next time, have backups and move data immediately if you get warning signs.

Not so... you can get the data back, but it will cost some big bucks.
You take it to the pros that deal with data recovery.

However, I don't think you want to hear that... so, it depends on how important the data on the HD was. If it was, then send it to the pros. If it wasn't that important, but, you want to try to get data back, you could throw it into the deep freezer in a air tight ziplock bag, then, leave it there overnight, then, hook it up to an internal bay, and see if it works. If it does, then save as much data as possible. If not.. well.. sell it on fleabay as a dead HD.

pull it out of the enclosure and install into a PC directly...on the tiny chance that it is an enclosure power issue instead of a failed drive issue

Dont freeze or heat your drives.
Plug it into a desktop, if its a full size HDD not another enclosure.
If its an HDD model for desktop spec/speed, you should avoid using them in external enclosures that don't have a fan for heat disapation.
