Put their heads on spikes at the city line to warn other indigents that Chicago is no refuge to sloth.

Lol at this!

Buddhist seem to have the right idea, cremate the dead and spread them out on the land to replenish.

These were Jewish paupers?
If you don't have money for a funeral, then you're not a real Jew. It's that simple.

Also, nobody can bitch about it being like burning Jews in the holocaust because this time we would be burning everyone equally. Equalocaust.

Is there a right to be buried now? How is this even a concern?

Cremate the dead and flush them down the toilet for all I care. Why cling to silly traditions?

Have to say I agree, that would seem like the best solution..

Is this even real? seems kinda staged? doesn't even look like there would be a foot of earth over those coffins?

Doubtful, but possible if they were not observant. An observant Jew who could not afford a proper burial would certainly have it paid for by the congregation, friends, family, etc. Paying for someone's funeral is considered one of the highest forms of charity, since they can never repay your act of kindness.

Many of them appear to be from the prison system, or at least that is alluded to in the body of the article:

New York City Department of Corrections spokesman Stephen Morello referred to a burial site in Hart Island, New York, where 800,000 bodies lie.
Officials there, he said, follow the same procedure - stacking coffins with inmates' remains three deep.

Not this validates the other spending but why is it my responsibility to pay for a burial of someone I don't know?

Not to mention the red tape mess it would create if the government did get involved in burial subsidies. Then you'd be required to deal with all the different religious views to avoid discrimination cases. And I am sure there'd be more than a couple additional regulations regarding government handled dead disposal

Well, you probably took care of these folks while they were alive, so....

Land is a commodity, not having any available in the highest population centers is a 'no duh' moment.

So why should I care about what Jewish law says about cremation?

Jewish law matters because Jews run the government

Actually, religion does play a huge role in government policies. It would make logical sense to have everyone be an organ donor unless they opt out, but we can't do that because schizophrenic retards think god will somehow get angry if their body is gutted for parts like a stolen Cadillac. It makes absolutely no sense. Some people are retarded.

For the same reason you expect people to care about what you want with regards to cremation. There cannot simply be a blanket statement of "cremate them all" or such.

As it should. The fastest way to a rebellion is to force people to violate their religion (if their religion matters to them at all).

I know a person who does not want to be an organ donar ever since he noticed that rich alcoholics get head of the line rights to new kidneys.

If you want something other than the default option, you're welcome to pay for it yourself. Your freedom of religion does not obligate society to provide you with the requirements for your religion. If it does, I'm going to start a religion where everyone is required to be a millionaire and sue the government for not making it happen.

Indeed. We should create an artificial shortage of kidneys so ONLY rich alcoholics get them, and the rest do without. It is your civic duty as an American :colbert:

There would be a constitutional fight over seperation of church and state, with the state definately losing. The state is required to provide Kosher meals to inmates, for example, already. Do you think the courts would allow the state to legally desicrate a body?

The default option is already burial. If you want to change it, you have to show why it is accpetable for the state to deny the rights of a well established and recognized religion. Good luck with that.
