3rd party software to partition

anyone know of some free 3rd party software that will let my shrink my current drive and then partition it?

Depends on the type of partition. FIPS or parted will resize FAT (Win9x/ME) partitions, but NTFS is more difficult. The Mandrake distro has a tool for resizing NTFS, so I suppose you could boot the Mandrake CD, modify the partitions, and then cut out if you don't actually want Mandrake. And I would definitely back up any remotely important data before messing with an NTFS partition.

Yes, and all you need is the first install disk if you don't intend to install Mandrake.

I've used Ranish, Parted, and Partition Magic. All of them have their limitations, but since parted and ranish are free, you can try both.
