(07/16/2006 08:32 PM by Rickten):

bite the bullet get the wrt54 from linksys, put some third party firmware on their and be done with it. I've dealt with many brands and there is always issues but this setup seems to have the least.

I ended up buying a Linksys wrt54G and was wondering why 3rd party firmware is recommended over Linksys firmware.

And where do I find 3rd party firmware?

Thanks.

It is kinda like overclocking. The manufacter usually pads their hardware capabilities with some sort of capping, to control things like heat buildup or to sell technically the same board, but with functions disabled for different pricing, but allowing them to stamp out one board for everything, so non-related people have found ways to get around this and make it do things that it was not sold to do or change the way the user interface works.

Whether or not is it capable is a different question. I have the same router you just bought and I just updated the official firmware and it works the way I want it to. I have had mixed results with 3rd party firmwares and unofficial updates. I just didn't care to both this time around.

The default firmware isn't bad. I've been using it (although I'm not the heaviest user out there, 10+ torrents seem to work fine though 😉), and it works fine. If you need more functionality than it provides, then look around for something else.

Provided you have a Linksys Router that can be Flashed.

Here this page linked below would show you a comparison of what each one of the major 3rd party firmware can or can not do.

The first on the Table is HyperWRT, it is the easiest to deal with and it is based on the original Linksys firmware.

If what you would like to do is included in (HyperWRT + Tibor), I would recommend it as a first choice.

Otherwise choose another one that can do what you need to do.

If you do not understand some of the terms ask specifically and some one here would be glad to answer.

What do I use it for?

1. Boosting the Power Output of the Wireless to 65mW.

2. Using IP reservation within the DHCP range.

3. Qos to control Bandwitdh usauge.

4. Some time configure to WDS.

I use a third party firmware so I can run asterisk to get free incoming and outgoing calls on my Linksys PAP2 using sipdiscount and ipkall. Being able to ssh into my router and do stuff from work comes in very handy also. Oh, and WPA2 support is another bonus... anyway, just more flexibility. It's definitely not for everyone.

The Linksys WRT54G, that I just purchased, has the Linksys firmware 1.00.6 installed. According to the Linksys site, firmware version 1.00.9 is availabl.e

What are the proper steps to install the most recent firmware version?

I can't seem to find the instructions on the site.

EDIT: I found it:

FYI, your Router seesn to be WRT54G v5. I.e. it is Not flashable with the good Stuff.

If you do want tp Flash you need to buy the WRT54L.
