3rd party GC controllers don't work on wii?

Friend was trying to play Mario Kart when he hooked up his GC controllers to it, the controllers light up but it won't let him select anything.

Anybody else encounter this problem???

I wondered about that. I bought Wavebird, but almost bought a 3rd party controller. I assumed both would work, but the thought did cross my mind.

my friends 3rd party (gamestop branded) wireless 2.4Ghz controller worked fine. just needed to flip the on/off switch when switching between games.

Are they wireless? Are they on the right channel?

Wired. I'll check with my friend again what 3rd party brand it is, those with 3rd party controllers, did you have to enable anything in the wii setup menu for it to work?

No. They just worked.

I had to select the Gamecube channel with the Wii Remote, but that's it.
