Man oh man, i thought i was going to be assisting with network and pc maintenance here, but nope, i gotta read up this book and get familiar within a few days time. oh man this is so boring. i wanted to learn something from someone, not from some book. damn them! also, this company is a bore with their staff of 2 programmers, 1 database analyst, and 1 systems admin. everybody else i'm sitting with is a marketting person. office jobs really suck... at least here.

Give it a chance. Maybe they just want you to be able to understand the basics when they start working with you person to person.

But you get paid on this internship, right? The problem with my IT job is that I was hired to be a network/pc tech, but I quickly learned to be a jack of all trades. So now I fix coffee makers, copiers, toaster ovens, and printers on top of the usual computer junk. After all, they are electronics, I know how to fix all... har har.

You'd rather do network and pc maintenance than something resembling actual programming?

Yeah, good point. It is a paid internship. I've done some dumb dull stuff already; researching for scanners, assisting on a system lock-up by watching the system admin shut off the dell laptop (LOL). All of a sudden the system admin slaps an access book on my desk and says, "Learn this in a week and be familiar with manipulating data." Oh! Ok. *reads* *grumbles*

Hm... I like walking around and "fixing" stuff or preventing things from needing fixing. Sitting at your desk for 8 hours a day, staring at the computer can be quite frustrating at times. Takes a toll on ME eyes.

Welcome to the work world! Sounds like a typical start at any company. It sucks, but sooner or later it will suck less. Maybe. On second thought it will always suck. Carry on.

I'd like to work with somebody I can learn from. I feel like I've already been here for years. I'm ready to leave! haha.

Congratulations! You've figured out in three days what it takes some of us years to learn. Work sucks.

You better get used to learning from a book! 99.99% of the time in IT you're not going to have someone hold your hand through things, so you need to learn to learn independently :)

Exactly!

When it seems unbearable, though, consider the money you're making for what you're doing. You could be flipping burgers or digging a hole for a lot less. This'll also look a lot better on your resume when you want to get a real job.

Good luck.

My last internship I interviewed for was supposed to be as a QA analyst. When I got there, I did absolutely nothing for two weeks. Then they tried to tell me the job was to do administrative work, documenting their business practices and putting it in a repository. I called in the next day and quit :D Internships suck, go get yourself a basic tech support job for an ISP where at least you will learn some tech and customer support, and make some valuable connections.

Well, I'm sorta learning from this damn book now. I also got a cup of coffee, so I'm not falling asleep anymore. I was actually thinking of going to work for Charter Communications. At least time passes by fairly quickly because you're always on the phone trouble-shooting. The benefits of working for charter are: free cable tv, free cable modem, and health insurance. This internship has the benefit of... AHH nevermind, there are NONE. Great.

I'm interning at some place called "California Credits Group." They do tax consulting for specific companies and individuals. Of course that obviously spells out, "OMFGWTFBBQBORINGWATERMELON."

You will soon learn job descriptions mean nothing....a job will sound good on paper but will be the same old sh1t anywhere you go...same office politics, same arguments...eventually after being in the work force long enough you will learn that every workplace has the same characters working there.

that annoying guy bob that talks to much and lies his ass off in one job will be named john in the other, that lazy disgusting guy peter will be billy bob somewhere else..

what im trying to say is welcome to the wondeful world of being a peon for the rest of your life!! :)

You could be happy that you got the internship instead of being a whiny baby about it. Interns rarely do anything hands on the first week or so anyway.

That's what all non-IT ppl think of IT people.

I've spent all summer working with Access... at least now I can say I know what it does and how to use it. It's my second stop on the VBA train (after my Excel summer two years ago) - at least it's related to my schooling (hahaha right - economics and psychology!)

I like being a whiny baby, considering the fact that I was told that I would be doing certain things on the first day. *CRIES*

But anyway, well, I'm making the best of things and trying to learn from this book as much as possible. I did not know that Microsoft published their own crummy books. Eh. *stretches*

So what are you people doing right now? Anything exciting/interesting? I'm interning full-time right now as an IT guy, but I'm still going to keep my current part-time job as a hospital PBX operator. It's actually quite exciting working for a hospital because the ER is right next to my department. :D

*yawn* Coffee does help, doesn't it?

lol. I just finished my third day of my IT internship too.

First day: Orientation meeting and explanation of alarms etc. Broke up at noon and went to respective departments to be trained by the outgoing interns. IT intern is on vacation, plus supervisor was busy setting up things for other interns so I got forgotten about. I move a desk and a computer into a room and that's it.

Second day: More moving crap. They are switching rooms with other departments and expanding so I got to move stuff down one floor. No elevator, narrow stairs.

Third day: Finally get to do something useful, start setting up computers for other interns to use. Finally get to talk to my supervisor about what will be going on for the year.

Tomorrow: more setup.

Well, well, I did something useful today afterall. I helped set up various dell laptops on the domain on the network. Uhm, I exported Outlook 2002 mail and settings to another computer. Uh, and I'm still reading up on access right now. Yippee. At least time past by quickly. Currently, I'm the only IT Intern right now, until tomorrow that is. The other IT intern will be returning and I believe he is going to tell me what to do, because I think he is going to leave the job soon. Ah well.
