3Gs speed testing question...

Hi all!
I have an iPhone here in Japan. Someone I know who lives in Tokyo used the Speedtest app, which has a test server in Tokyo. His speeds for DL are averaging about 3mbs. I live about 500km away, and the max I have tested at is 1mbs. My average is probably about .5.
Are these numbers accurate? If so, why the difference? And is this why I get lag on YouTube, etc.? He's using VPN now, and gets more than double my bets speed, via a server in san francisco! Whats going on?

Maybe it is because you are 500km away that explains why you aren't getting the same speeds as him... 500 km away...

Anyway, are you on 3G or Wifi? If 3G it could just that the tower in your area is weaker, or older.
