I am trying to clock my X2 4800+ to 250 * 12 FSB and have run into a glitch.

I have an Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe board with Crucial Ballistix PC4000 ram.

I have ascertained that the board runs fine on 250FSB with an HTT multiplier of 4; and also the ram runs fine at 250 cos its PC4000; I did this with the cpu multi set at 6 - whole system was rock solid.

I have had stability running 240Mhz FSB and 12.0 multiplier giving me near 2.9Ghz also but I really want that 3Ghz if I can get it....

I am now upping the multiplier on the cpu and it runs stable at 10.5 but fails Prime95 when set to 11 although Aquamark3D and 3DMark06 both finish just fine.

I have incremented VCORE to maintain stability but have now reached 1.65V and would appreciate feedback before pushing it any further.

I have a good watercooling solution using the Thermaltake Kandalf LCS and CPU temps are 45-48 under 100% cpu load - is upping the voltage further going to give stability at 3Ghz or have I just reached the limit of my cpu?

I was under the impression that the X2 4800+ should do 3GHz without too much trouble so would appreciate hearing from anyone who has managed it and how....

I haven't tried clocking the FSB past 250 yet so maybe I can achieve 285 * 10.5....

Thanks all.

Seriously, 3 GHz is a nice dream, but one that's extremely unlikely for an X2 4800+, & considering the vcore you are pumping into yours, i'd back off that dream.

Then again, if you don't mind killing your X2 at a young age...:p

Thermaltake isn't considered "good" watercooling. It's poor at best. I rank it with high end air cooling.
You're going to want to get REAL cooling if you really want to hit 3.0GHz and be willing to fry a chip or two trying due to the voltages needed.
Something Storm or Apogee based with an MCP655 and a 120.2 or .3

Agreed, you've definitely reached your chip's limit. If you're going to keep it, back your OC down some, and your vcore quite a bit. Quite a few Opterons don't even reach 3 Ghz, you know. Opterons are cheap now, finally, if you decide to try another processor.

Umm i would bet that the x2 4800+ is binned similarly as the opterons ( i know all the harsh server conditions stuff). It wouldnt be economical to buy an opty. If you are just overclocking for fun then and you really want 3 ghz just get some better water cooling. It would be worth it because you could also silently cool the 8800 and perhaps get a better oc out of it.

1.65 vcore is a bit over the edge most people say 1.55 for dual core amd and 1.6 for single.

Thanks all for the advice!

I think I will back off the voltage and get the best I can @ 1.55V and live with it.

I also will hook up a DangerDen block to the 8800 when they release them so it runs silent and cooler for definite.

Myself and a friend got locked in a benchmark/overclock competition but we have now seen the error of our ways and he's backed out entirely. Neither of us noticed any change in BF2142 so it's all moot anyway LOL.

Shame that the Thermaltake seems poor - it came recommended and reviews looked good. Bum advice but it works well enough and I like the case functionality - it should cool the 8800 adequately for a reasonable overclock.
