I agree it can be done but not easily. I would say 3.7~3.8 is reasonable. My 3.2 can do 4Ghz but that even takes a good bump of vcore to do it. Of course this is all with good cooling and not that crap Intel Stock cooling.

Okay. Thank you. I was thinking it wouldn't be too hard with the right RAM and heatsink... but that's a given.

Considering I can get around ~3380 MHz with my P4C 2.6 GHz (with stock cooling and a "walmart" no name case (per se)) it shouldn't be much of a feat with good cooling. I don't even have any extra fans in my case and I still get idle temps of about 38-40C. Not sure about load...I think about 48-50C. Voltage 1.68v. Core speed: 3384.3 MHz. Bus: 1041.3 MHz (260.3MHz x 4) using a P4 Northwood. I'm also using Corsair Value memory at 2.5-3-4-7 and 208.3 MHz. FSB : DRAM=5:4. Hope you can, I've had very good luck with my Northwood anyway.

Right board is important also...not all s478 mobos can handle high overclock 24/7 with the prescott.

Ah okay. I have a 3ghz P4 with a Zalman CNPS7000 and pc2700 OCZ, which I need to upgrade, and I've hit 3.6ghz with some trial and error. Asus P4C800-D mobo. Just thought I'd check to make sure what y'all have gotten as well.

Your mobo will be fine! If you attempt to overclock to 4gig make sure you sink the mosfets (specially around the powerplant area)

Let us know how it goes G-Luck! :)

The board is one of the best. Cooling is fine, I would recommend the XP-90 though. You definitely need to upgrade your memory. You need to be running 1:1, so you need memory that can reach at least ddr500 speeds. Memory with TCCD chips would be a very good choice, like PQI Turbo or OCZ Platinum.

with about 4 case fans, and a Zalman CNPS7000Cu i was able to get my 3ghz Northwood running stable at 3808mhz (15x254). With better ram and maybe watercooling i could possibly go higher.

Using dual Kingston ValueRam PC3200 CL3 512, my mobo is a MSI 865G Neo2.

4ghz is very hard although it is within reach of an 3.0 Northwood, alittle harder for a 3.0 prescott but still achievable. No overclocks are guarenteed, but with good cooling, good ram, good ventilation and artic silver 5... most Northwoods can reach at least 3.6.
