Hey guys,

What kind of SATA cable do I need for the following....

Seagate ST3500641AS 500GB SATA/300 7200RPM 16MB Hard Drive

note that this one is 3 gigabits per second so I thought I have to use a *special* SATA cable ?

I'm confused.. does the 3GB/sec version uses a Different SATA cable than the 1.5GB/sec ?

And where do you guys suggest I can get the cable from ?

Thanks alot :)

There are some cables marked for SATA-2 that have a little metal clip that helps hold them in place. They may also have better shielding but there's no way for you to really know.

for those with seagate sataII HD, is it set to 150 speed out of the box? my 400gb 7200.10 looks like it has a jumper set to 150 speed. but the jumper is almost impossible to get it off...

Ok everyone, please listen carefully. A SATA-II drive does not run at 3Gb per second. Sata-II is a MARKETING ploy and does not exist! Current chipsets and firmware are incapable of saturating a Sata (1.5 Gb) bus let alone the so called Sata-II.

Any improvement seen (and then only in benchmarks) of Sata-II over Sata can be traced to higher platter density and/or firmware improvements.

Sata cables have NOTHING to do with a Sata drives efficiency or speed of operation. In fact, Sata cables offer nothing as an improvement over ribbon cables other than possibly allowing better air flow.

Try http://www.SVC.com - you can ask them to ship small orders by FCM uninsured to save on shipping.

Actually you can get burst transfer rates of higher than 150MB/sec with some SATA-2 drive/controller combos. Whether that makes any difference in your real-world experience, IDK...

All of my dealings with SVC have been pretty smooth. They were all pretty small orders though.
