Looking for a friend who is tired of hooking up their usb 3g card to their laptop. they want to have it on all the time, and i suggested getting a router that has a usb port which works with 3g cards. that way they can leave the card connected to the router, and just connect to the router wirelessly.

they love the idea, but i have no idea what to suggest. they wont want to spend much more then $50 or so, maybe im way off on the price but i wanted to see what people suggest....

So, they want to plug the USB 3G card into the router and have the router "distribute" or spread that internet service from the carrier (that the USB 3G card receives) into a wifi signal they can use with their laptop's wifi card?

What carrier is this? If it's sprint, it might just be cheaper to pickup one of their pocket routers / hotspots. I think AT&T has one too and so does Verizon.

yeah she just wants to come home and allow her laptop connect to the internet anywhere around her house. they dont use it outside their house, she doesnt like the dongle thing hanging off her laptop and the process it takes to connect to the internet. they live in the country so thats actually the best internet they can get right now. its verizon btw.

i thought the 3g router would be the way to go since they can switch carriers and still be covered. newegg has a zoom model for $65 that looks like it would work well....

CradlePoint. Hands down.

You are looking at around $200 USD, but I work with 10 of them in mobile applications. Pretty much flawless.

MBR1000 has Draft N.

Check out 3gStore and their forums for more info.

$50 for a 3g router? Haha - considering you can barely get a reliable soho router for that price - let alone a 802.11n router - yeah it's a bit unrealistic. I'd also suggest cradlepoint - their basic 3g home router runs about $120 or so.

If the person is willing to resign her contract w/ the MiFi 2200, she can get it for a penny.
