okay, i'm caving in and getting one. i can get a pretty good deal on a refurb 3g 20gb ipod from the apple store, but i can get a 4g 20gb for about 20 bucks more, or for 10 dollars more i can get a 3g 30gb, u guys get my drift. i've heard some bad things about the 4g, like you cant turn off the click wheel sound? i was wondering if i could get some comparisons from people who own 3g and 4g ipods.

I just bought a 3G 15GB iPod for $250. The new one is $300. The big difference is the battery life (8 vs 12). That might be important to you if you take long trips. Other than that it's slightly thinner, and I do mean slightly. The click wheel I guess is cool but it's not a huge improvement over the 3G wheel. If you can get a good deal on a 3G I would just get that. The 4G iPod is worth $20 for the extra 4hrs of battery but if the difference is $50 or more the 3G is fine. Belkin makes a battery pack for the iPod as well. It holds 4AA batteries and attaches to the back of the iPod. It adds about 15-20 hours of life so for really long trips neither iPod is good without that. I know I'll be getting one of those.
