3G + 4G penetration

So ive never had anything but EDGE before, I noticed in my house, my G2 only gets about 1-2 bars of HSPA at the most, and usually just defaults down to EDGE. However, as soon as I step outside, I get 5 bars of HSPA and full download speed. Is this supposed to be normal?

It's about frequency. Tmobile uses 1900-2100mhz, I believe. The higher the frequency, the lower the building penetration. And the lower, the better the building penetration.

inside - use wireless internet. I think it saves on battery life of the phone.
