Hi all,

I'm a 3D artist who uses Max and Maya on a daily basis. I recently purchased a Sapphire ATI X800 XT with 256MB RAM and I'm now experiencing such drastic slow-down in my 3D viewports while modeling that it's unusable.

Any games I run are more or less perfectly acceptable (doom 3 runs great, as well as all the other current titles). It's only Max and Maya that have drastically impacted performance. What I'd like to know is if this is experienced by others and if there is a way to fix it.

My current PC specs are:
P4 3.0 Ghz
1GB RAM
WinXP Pro

I really don't want to return this, pay a 15% restocking fee, and buy another card on top of that, but it's looking to be the only choice. Many thanks in advance to anyone who can help me out.

make sure your opengl settings in the ati driver are set at application default for aa & af. and dont try to open too many max & mya windows at the same time.

Check. They are set at Application Preference at the moment, which was default, so no changes in performance at the moment.

I've tried both OGL and DX acceleration in Max as well, but neither seem to increase performance at all.

Thanks for the reply. If you have any more suggestions, I'll try anything

could you maybe have max/ maya set to software rendering as opposed to hardware accelerated?

"drastic slowdown"...what did you upgrade from? a real or modded FireGL or quadro (even an older one) will still be much faster in those apps than a newer gamer card.

run specviewperf 8 (or 7) and see what you get...search the web for results with similar hardware and see if there's a difference - I think guru3d has a thread on Specviewperf8 scores.

Max and Maya are configured correctly.

I upgraded from a GeForce 3 Ti500, which has perfectly acceptable performance in both applications despite being such an old card. This card causes these applications to run slower than a P3 500 in software mode, which is why I find it so irritating. I have heard similar reports from other graphic artists using this card, this guy in particular (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=182302) seems to be having the identical issue, however I know it's not limited to this card either.

Thanks for the responses!
