3DMark2001 :: Can't Create DX Device??

I've been trying to run and install 3DMark2001. I once had it installed and when I ran the tests on one of them it'd quit out saying unable to initalize full screen D3D device :: out of memory. Then after that quit out, my DXDiag would not be able to create a DX Device. So I'd have to reboot my computer. And then DXDiag would function properly again, but still 3DMark wouldn't.

So anyhow I uninstalled 3DMark.

And now when I try installing it, it says Can Not Create Device on the install.

I installed hte latest DX8.0 also the Latest Det 4's on Win 2K Prof.

Anyone else experiencing this problem? I already checked bios, checked aperture size, enabled fast writes. I have an Abit -KG7Lite. I also got the latest 4 in 1 drivers from VIA I believe.

It seems that the 3DMark problems always happens when I try to run 3DMark tests or install. But like I can run Max Payne which uses D3D. And that runs fine, sometimes I'll get the same error as 3DMark and I'll have to reboot to play again, but on most cases Max Payne runs fine. And OpenGL runs fine too (Counter-Strike runs flawlessly, except I'm stuck @ 60 FPS @ 1024x768, which I have no idea.. even w/ V-Sync on, I should be able to top that, I have a very good monitor brand spanking new flat 19 inch crt)

Thanks in advance =)

You are not alone. This has become a quite common complaint, especially with the new detonator drivers and the "older" cards like your GF2/32. (See video forum)
I have been examining this quite a bit, since I had the same problem, and finally got all my machines to run with the 21.81's, flawlessly at any BM setting. but I'm not quite ready to put forth what my own solutions are. Still trying things. Getting the new drivers to run would not be worth the effort were it not for the spectacular gains, especially with the lower end cards. Since the detonators push the card to the max, any flawed element in your system will kick you out.

Just as a teaser I will tell you the following:
You must use German Program "dxbuster" to remove all that built up overlaid DirX first.
You must use detonator destroyer to remove all vestiges of NVidia from your system
You must run sys file checker
You must use VIA 4 in 1 4.33
You must not use the self install proceedure video drivers (right click icon/extract to)
You must redownload 3dMark 2001 and Dirx 8.1.683, and VIA 4.33 (on floppy) with no anti virus running, no software firewall (especially Zonealarm), and no "helper" multi channel prog like downloadaccelerator or GetRight. Its better to D/L early A.M.
You must not have both 2000 and 2001 3DMK installed.
Enable 4X must be set in BIOS before installing anything
AGP Driving value should be set to auto
AGP arpeture @128
The full VIA's with TURBO for AGP, must be installed first (you will be in 256 colors/640/480 default standard vga)
DirX second (and reboot even if not prompted)
NVidia third
You may not use Powerstrip/NVMax/Rivatuner etc.
You may then install coolbits.

Eventually, I will have screenshots of the workable registry settings
(HKey/local machine/system/ccs/services/class/display/0000/nvidia/d3d)

Wow thanks. Okay I was getting scared I couldn't fix it or something. Too bad I don't have DSL installed at home yet, so my computer is pretty lifeless. I do have the DX8 file. And I do have my Det 4's.. I'll check everything again. Thanks
