I recently up?graded my computer.

It was a p3-750 with a v3-3000. It got about a 3500 in 3dmark2000 in both win2k and win98.

I now have a t-bird 900 oc to 1050 with a gf2mx. I ran the test in win98 and got a 4500 and tried it in win2k and got.... 2200.

I tried the latest drivers but it does not help...

mobo is 8KTA3 kt-133a
ram: 256 megs at 133 cas 3
cpu: t-bird 900 @ 1050
video: jaton gf2mx
os: win2k w/ sp1

W2k can be a mixed bag for apps and hardware, unless the apps or hardware are optimized for W2K. Most will run a lot slower compared to Win98, but others that have been optimized for W2k will run much better than they do in Win98. 3DMark benchmark is one of the many that take a performance hit in W2K. Look at some of the websites that review cards, as most now include W2k and Win98 scores, and you'll see that currently, most software is not optimized for W2K.

I found that when I installed DX8 on WIn2K server my scores increased 34% ;)
I too was disturbed to see a score of only 4900 in 3DMark2000 with my #1 system (check my rigs) until I installed DX8 and it jumped up to 6700.
Of course you should make sure it won't hurt any of your apps to do this before going there, but I have no regrets.
I started up Q3A at 1600x1200x32bit and it ran smooth as silk with all the settings up high;)

Why are you trying to play games on a NT based OS in the first place? Win2k is for appz and Win98SE is for games. Get with the program and do dual boot.

Actually, W2K runs many games just as well as 98/ME, if not better. OpenGL games work great, and in my experience(I am dual booting myself), D3D games work just as well too(3Dmark is an exception, but I could care less). UT actually runs a few fps faster.

why dual boot when I have not gone into win98 for months now. I am quite happy with win2k but just wished my score was higher, I will try dx8, it might have been wiped out when I had to 'repair' the OS since I changed massive amounts of hardware :).

That happened to me too. After a repair I was back to square one. Had to reinstall a bunch of stuff.
Finally got to the low priority stuff like performance and found I didn't have it. Installed DX8 final and shazamm it was back up there!

In win2k, i got around 3600 3dmarks with a p3 700@938. Voodoo3@195 mhz. 128 mb Mosel Cas2.
In win98, i get around 3750. I think the problems are in the drivers. I am trying out win98 these days, and i must say the image quality with the win9x drivers for the voodoo3 are in another world than with the win2k drivers. Try UT and you will see.
Otherwise, win2k shouldnt be a problem.
