3dmark06 slowing down in successive runs.

I hope this isn't a stupid question.

I have the following set up:

Conroe 6420
2GB of G.Skill PC6400 RAM at 4-4-4-12
BFG 7950 GT 256MB
Gigabyte DS3 Rev 1.3 965P

I have the 6420 overclocked to 2.8GHz on stock cooling. I have the ram set to 1:1 w/ the FSB at 350MHz. I've run lots of the stress tests and it seems to be very stable. it has never crashed. I've actually run it at 3.2GHz but i decided that it was too hot for stock cooling for my comfort level and dropped it down to 2.8GHz.

When I boot up my computer fresh after having it off for some time... i'm getting about 5575 in 3dMark06. After a while of being on the machine, if i run it after turning off the machine and rebooting again, my score is about 2250. So something is happening that when the machine "warms up" my score is plummeting.

The thing is that even when totally cool on a fresh start up in the morning or when iget home from work, the temps on the cores and the GPU are pretty much the same as where they are after 2 hrs of just idling.

Any ideas of what might be causing that?
