3DMark06 scores GTX295 vs 7979 Asus Top

Hey guys I upgraded from a GTX 295 to the 7970 Asus Top, and on my system I wanted to see how much better my scores would be now. Just curious.

A bit dissappointed though, I previously got 23900, and with my new graphics card AND uogarded ram to 12GB from 6GB I got.. 22100?

Any ideas?

Maybe. It's not the best CPU but its ok I think. It's an i975X OC to 4.0ghz.

Probably its 3dmark06?

My GTX Titan doesn't even run any faster than an 8800GT in some old games. If its DX8 or early DX9, expect nonexistent performance gains. Also the focus since 2007 has been more increasing shader output, rather than pushing triangles. You aren't going to get linear (or sometimes, much of any) gains when it comes to programming designed for older architectures.

I was pretty disappointing too when I found out my framerates for old Aurora or Morrowind era rpgs wasn't any better on the Titan than it was with hardware from 2007.

Don't feel bad. When I bought my 7970's and ran 3dMark06 most of the time I was getting very little gpu usage while running it. All the work stayed on the CPU on that older program. Other than the Canyon Flight, I don't even think it kicked my card into 3d clocks for sustained periods.

I guess one positive is I played half life 2, with settings I didn't use previously (everything the highest) and I got as high as 302 FPS with about 300 stable and an occasional 250 dip lol- a little higher than I used to have lol

What does everybody get for 3D Mark 11 for decent 1 x video card system?

Just forget 3dmark honestly. You don't 'play' it, and as a reflection of gaming it's nowhere near as viable as it once was. Real game benches are much more accurate now. 3dmark 06 is DX 9c, so it doesn't use any of the DX10+ features anyway. More or less, it at best only shows potential performance with old games. With a 7970 that's kind of meaningless, as it will kick butt at every single old game out there anyway.

3dmark06 is DX9 and obsolete for new cards. Even DX10 GPUs released in '08 were off in scores vs older cards. This benchmark needs to be wiped off the internet.

3DMark as a whole has little bearing on actual game performance. Needless to say you should be able to run just about any game fully maxed now.

What does everybody get for 3D Mark 11 for decent 1 x video card system?

Love it. The only thing I do dislike, I get flickering sometimes on the desk top from when it jumps from low power to a higher voltage. As far as games go, playing 2560x1600 it really chews through everything. BF3 is so much nicer than struggling with my 5870's I had due to ram limitations. Crysis 3 plays great, I have no complaints. I have the Gigabyte 7970ghz editions, that have a nice clock set out of the box.
