Next-generation 3D graphics benchmark arrives this week; new benchmark to feature extensive Shader Model 3.0, high dynamic range, and multi-core CPU testing.

PC system owners prepare to return to Proxycon and welcome back that queasy inadequate feeling. GameSpot will premier 3DMark06, Futuremark's newest 3D benchmarking program, on Wednesday, January 18 at 6 a.m. PST.

Longtime 3DMark users will recognize many of the tests from previous versions, but Futuremark has increased the complexity of each test to take advantage of the latest graphics hardware. 3DMark06 has an upgraded Canyon Flight test originally introduced in 3DMark05 and a brand new Deep Freeze test that make extensive use of Shader Model 3.0 and HDR rendering, two highly touted features available in the latest GPUs from Nvidia and ATI.

While 3DMark05 could only measure single-core CPU performance, the new 3DMark06 CPU test suite has support for single-core and dual-core processors. Acknowledging the increasing importance of AI and physics calculations in-game, the 3DMark06 now includes CPU performance in the overall 3DMark06 score.

So i wonder how slow the servers will be that day?? ;)

Honestly I don't think you'll even hit 1000.

Last I heard this could run SM2.0, so I'm expecting 1000 on 6800GS @ 6800ultra+ speeds and 500 on x850xtpe.

This may push me into buying the new 7800GS AGP card coming out Feb. 2nd.

I want to see what they've done with the graphics. I don't care if I get 20 marks on this. :p

This is going to push my system, my 7800GT already seems lacking... Anyone up for 3 hour download wait times and 1/kbs?

Hehe... at 20 marks you wont even need to take a screenshot of it, you'll be able to break down every nook and cranny in the scene frame by frame!

I just hope the mighty slied GTX's score sub-100. And my all powerful 7800GT scores 8000+.

FINALLY! Time to retire 3dMark01 :) and replace 03 and 05 versions which were basically gpu dependent.

Can't wait! Now that there is a program to benchmark with shader model 3.0, HDR, and dual core support, maybe the industry will start making games that use these features as well!!

Why, again are you running 01?

I was just pointing out how some might still prefer to use 01 for overall system performance since 03 is very gpu dependent and 05 has some cpu wall at about 12-13k. If we got a bench to test full system performance similar to 3dmark01, but with more demands on the videocard, it'll be a better benchmark. Hopefully 06 will allow default options beyond 1024x768 for those that still want a more video dependent bench. And yeah, I was playing 3dmark01 last night - caught 16 butterflies in the nature scene.

Heh my 9600XT gets ~2200 in 05. I expect ~500 in 06

BTW 3dMark is not a game ............................... Its a Sport ;)
