This machine is by no means a super server. I got it when my girlfriend needed a workstation about a year and a half ago; at the time it was a little over $1500 on sale. Recently I decided to turn it into a secondary gaming machine for her to use, so we could play a few games together.

I ran down to CompUSA and bought the PNY 6800 on sale for $200 yesterday. I installed it, ran 3DMark05 and got 729. This was right after I installed the card.

Today I performed a driver update and successful soft-mod to unlock the extra pipelines, then used RivaTuner to overclock the card to 375 core, 777 memory, which is about all it would let me do (I backed off somewhat when I reached the maximum). I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing with this stuff yet-- I'm like a monkey pushing buttons to get a banana. I have no idea whether I should back off one or the other, but the card doesn't seem to be straining.

My latest 3DMark05 results: 3415. I imagine that's not fantastic, but it's a bigger number... I haven't had time to test this setup with any stressful games yet, but after all the work it seems like a couple of older games are running even faster.

This machine:

2 X 2.0Ghz Xeon (512k 533Mhz FSB)
4 X 256MB PC2100
L505 chipset
1 X 40GB 7200 EIDE (system drive)
1 X 80GB 7200 EIDE (programs)

The best part of all of this is that I now have a live-in gaming partner! My girlfriend's actually excited to play some games with me and geek out a little...
