Thanks for your input robcy.

I think that I order my 2400+ right away. But, (SURPRISE) now I got ANOTHER question about that, and that's about the cooling of the CPU.

Does someone of you have a good suggestion about what CPU-cooler I should get to that CPU, or even better, a link to a place on the Internet where they review CPU-coolers so I could decide which one to get?

Hmm, I have some Artic Silver 3 already so I just need the cooler and the fan, and if you now about a really quiet cooler (fan) I would be happy since I don't like noisy computers.

I have a 3 year old 1.3 P4. I upgraded my Geforce 2 GTS to a 9800 PRO last Christmas and went from a 192 3dmark 03 to a 4552.

i dont think they do make them that slow. Just whatever you do DONT GET AN XT. you can overclock the 9800 pro to past xt speeds. i run mine at xt speeds 24/7. the xt is way too much for not a lot more performance. i dont think the 420 core is going to be twice the performance of a 9800 PRO either. maybe 40%

I'd imagine a 2400+ could handle that slight an overclock, but I probably wouldn't risk anything for such a small speed gain, especially if you'll be using a quiet (meaning not very efficient) HSF.

The retail AMD HSF is pretty good, but it may be obnoxiously whiny. I couldn't stand the noise from my XP 1700+'s retail HSF, so I bought a Thermalright SLK-700 and a very slow 80mm fan (<2000rpm NMB). My temps are only a little higher than with the retail HSF, but obviously the setup is much quieter. The SLK-700 is decently expensive, though: probably about $25 without a fan. You might just want to look for a cheap 'n quiet recommendation at SilentPCReview.com. People there recommended a few $10-15 aftermarket HSFs with quiet 80mm fans: FalconRock or WhisperRock IV, IIRC. If you do go with an 80mm fan on your HSF, make sure it uses a three-lug clip to attach to the MB socket. I wouldn't trust a top-heavy HSF with the skimpy one-lug clips found on cheap/small HSFs.

Now I have made my order, and that became a little different than what I had in my mind at the beginning.

Since you suggested that I would buy a faster CPU to start with I obeyed that "command" and ordered an Athlon XP 2400+ CPU with a Spire WhisperRock IV CPU cooler.

Thanks a lot for giving me a tip about the not so noisy Spire WhisperRock IV CPU cooler Pete.

And since ATI is going to release their 420 Core in a not so distant future I gonna wait for that one and see if it is gonna be a real screamer when it comes to performance.

About ATIs 420, does someone of you have some info or a link to somewhere on the Internet that have posted some info about that GPU?

But all cards start at $400-$500, if an XT is $450, just spend an extra $50 and get one that's way faster.

The R420 should be wickedly fast, but it should also debut at $400 for a 128MB card and $500 for 256MB. Don't hold your breath if you're on a budget.
