Here is why. 3Dmark 01 is more influenced by cpu and gpu, instead of just gpu. most dialup modems use your cpu to do all the calculations, and because pci is so slow, that portion of the cpu is used for alot longer of a time, slowing the whole system down a good bit. when running 3dmark01 it would no doubt score lower. Run 3dmark 03 and see if there is still a score difference.

Almost all modems sold within the last 5 years are Winmodems - they use CPU cycles to work (ie not a fully hardware modem). So, that makes perfect sense that your score goes down a bit.

Ethernet on the other hand is all done by the card (chip) and the external devices, so high-speed internet users don't get any dropoff in CPU performance.

I guess I should've mentioned that I'm using an external USB v.92 Creative Modem Blaster.

3DMark03 scores seem to be ok ~5000.

On an unrelated note I'm very impressed with the 9800np. Currently at 400/315 :)

Hehe I get teased enough at work for having a completely monster system and being on dialup :) I'll have DSL Ultra come the new year once I move to somewhere other than the country :)
