3DMark, the unbiased benchmark....*insert rolleyes here*

Nice read, but i really don't care. (So i never read it 😛)

3DMock doesn't really matter.

It's games that matter to me 🙂

1) It is a very good article on the shadow techniques employed
2) It matters very much if games make use of the same techniques

Yeah, I don't care about 3DMark either...at all.

Just thought I'd post this since there is a thread about how bad ATI is right now. Like I said in the other thread, both companies engage in things the consumer will frown upon. I also don't like hearing how the 6800 series just destroys the X800 series...because that is absolute BS. IMO, it is better, but barely.

Here, Nvidia and Futuremark teamed up to implement a feature that ATI would not have. If ATI knew about this, they would certainly release an explanation as to why the X800 series is slower in 3DMark and why they do not have this feature in place. The lack of such a release leads me to believe that they were unaware of Futuremark's involvement with Nvidia in this matter.

I could be wrong though.

Whether this "feature" will be used in games remains to be seen.

ATi isn't bad now, lol.

People here (especially in this forum) have lost all touch with reality.

Both ATi & nVidia are great; the only people who can't see that are all the morons.

i really dont care bout 3d mark at all

but why is this bad exactly? Nvidia supporting that PCF and DST from the GF3 and up to me sounds like nvidia were just more comitted to providing the consumer with the very latest technology, and ATI didnt?

i think if a GPU supports a certain special feature, and its gonna be used alot in games then why not test with it on?

edit : ahh just read the bit about Nvidia owning the keys to said technologies....lol, now i see why

even with those things turned on, ATI win, so whats the big deal? ill take whatever performance enhancing features i get given thanks

nVidia aren't very nice in this aspect of not letting anyone use it.
AFAIK ATi's 3Dc is an open source thing so anyone can use it, but nVidia feel a need to keep this tech as a fee payable thing, according to the article.
Not good for gamers IMO.

Excellent article but I'm still puzzled why he didn't label the images DST on or off. I want to know which one looks better. Also, how do you enable/disable DST and PCF?

No that's not it. 3Dc is simply a compression algorithm that anyone can implement however they see fit. DST is also a method that anyone can implement - and ATi does so as well just using shaders. What Nvidia has patented is their "hardware" implementation of DST which is very different to sharing an algorithm or texture format.

Gotta use the professional version of 3dmark05 I think.

Also, 3dmark allows the 6xxx cards to run it in Sm3.0, which boosts performance slightly. Not sure what that has to do with this topic but it's just another thing that Nvidia can do currently and ATI can't...

But yeah, that is kinda cheap...Oh well. It IS just 3dmark...

I'm not going to jump on the conspiracy bandwagon here and say nVidia payed to get DST and PCF into 3DMark05, but I think that DST and PCF being included without full disclosure is wrong. Sure 3DMark is only a benchmark but its widely used making it very important.

This is pretty old news. If you want side by side comparison pics, look up Hexus' first or second 3DM05 article.

But thanks for the link. Hanners is always worth a read.
