3dfx Selling Its Chips [2:45 pm] Rat
According to the info posted on Evil Avatar, numerous financial problems and continuous losses forced 3dfx Company to start looking for new ways-out. The first thing 3dfx is planning to undertake in this respect is to give up the exclusive manufacturing of the graphics cards on its own chips and to let other manufacturers do it. Here is a bit more:

3dfx will retain exclusive rights to manufacture and sell the graphics cards on the already lunched chips, such as Voodoo3, VSA-100.
As far as the new chips starting from VSA-200 are concerned, 3dfx will not only manufacture and sell the graphics cards on these chips but also sell the chips to the OEMs and mainboard manufacturers for integrating into their products. Besides, 3dfx will also provide third companies with the licenses for its graphics cores, so that they could integrate them into their chipsets.
Well, this solution seems quite logical. It will t least last the company for another while.

heh no I didn't, I just think I would hear it from a normal news source before I hear it on the BBS. that's how it normally works with me! so yeah I'm surprised.. if this is TRUE!

it doesn't matter to me, much, becuase all I really want is a good video card at low low prices. This will help them go down faster! I guess after 2 product launches using their current method of delivery and creation, 3dfx sees that even though the cards sell very well, it's not necessarily very profitable. It's like going OEM, or Retail.

anywho, I'm still looking for a link to confirm it. otherwise I don't trust this.

I really don't know why this is considered to be new "news":

3dfx is not getting out of the board business.

OEM means the boxmakers (Dell) and motherboard makers. 3dfx will sell chips to those OEM's instead of making the cards themselves.

3dfx will try and sell/subcontract out their Juarez facility because they are not putting enough business through it to capture the right economies of scale.

edit - Right in the Gigapixel proxy statement and the presentaion used in the roadshow, it was clearly stated that 3dfx plans on selling graphic cores. These would be IP sales.

Again, old news.

however IF 3dfx cleans up it's act with much faster chips, THEN, they can sell OEM's alot faster, and continue it's great retail business. I think the lack of fast individual chips has been 3dfx's problem concerning OEM deals.

in fact, 3dfx has a sweet retail presence.. I'd much rather them stay like they are now, and just figure out a way to get better chips.. like what they're doing with the RAMPAGE.

EDIT: STill no other places reporting this. I guess Michael might be right.

hum....

for me, 3dfx will lose its prestige,
imagine if visiontek makes its Voodoo6 named like the Super Duper Card 6000!
AH! I can't take that!
plus 3dfx makes GREAT BOX COVERS too!

oh well, Prestige and box design don't pay bills.

but selling to Dell-type OEM will be great....
at least it Dell won't give it a stupid name nor a crap box design.

dell isn't going to give it a name or box design. look at the nvidia oem cards that dell has, it says "geforce 2 gts 32 megabyte" or something like that. dell isn't selling them retail. this post doesn't say anything about other companies selling voodoos into the retail market, so there will be no box design other than the 3dfx ones.

More official than a statement from the CFO of 3dfx?

Michael

btw - I'm "potterm". Guess what the M stands for.
