3dfx voodoo3 drivers for win98, need help picking one for a friend to play Quake3

Just when I thought linux video drivers where confusing...

Ok, here's the deal. I have a friend who I bought Quake3 for. He has a Compaq Athlon (750?) running win98se and a 3DFX Voodoo 3 (3000 or 3500) with TV out. I want to make sure he gets the best performance possible in Quake3, but do not want to sacrifice stability of his system otherwise, or loose TV out DVD watching capabilities. Also, I think he currently has DirextX 8.0a installed...I had updated a number of things on his system a while back including this. All his current games are older and do not use 3D.

I was going to email him links of what he needs to download before I go over there: updated 3DFX drivers, updated Quake3 binaries, etc.

On my trip to www.3dfx.com I noticed it now directs people to www.voodoofiles.com for drivers. Only thing is there are a TON of different drivers, and I am clueless as to what is BEST.

Should I use one of the "original" drivers? Which one? Or should I use one of the 3rd party drivers? These are the 3rd party drivers I found that may be applicable:

This is confusing as hell. My friend is hardly computer literate at all, so I need to get this set up right the first time. I cannot expect him to troubleshoot or download/update new drivers later.

Aside from solitare, I have not played a game on windows since ~1994 when I played DOS games in the Chicago (win95) beta. Win9x on systems for "business use" I am quite familiar with. So any other hints you might have will be appreciated. Such as, should I have him download an updated DirectX too?

Thanx in advance!

I really wouldn't worry about which driver you use. I have a similar system (Althon 900, Voodoo3 2k) and I've used the newest 3dfx drivers (1.07) as well as CA's 1.08.

It seems to me the CA drivers were a little better. The performance difference is pretty negligible though. If you're really conerned about performance manually set the virtual memory, defrag it, and install win98 lite.

Even doing all this I will increase your performance 10% at most. No worries though, the system will run fast enough.

Ok, I'll point him towards the official 1.07 drivers. I just thought I might be missing the boat or something 😉

What about DirectX...should he be ok with 8.0a (IIRC it was about that era when I gave him some updates I had on CD) or should that be upgraded?

Mainly I am concerned about stability over performance. The less phone calls I get the better 😉
