I was gonna buy a video card for a new system I'm building when I traded someone local my S3 Trio64+ for this 3Dfx video card.

When I boot, the first thing on the screen is:

MXIC
Micronix International
MX85251 BIOS 9/11/97 ver 1.05
4MB Frame Buffer 2MB Texture Memory

It has some 3Dfx chips and somewhere I read it could be a voodoo rush.
So, what is this thing?

I have another video card on a shelf in a box labeled:

Voodoo2
BLACKMAGIC 3D
3D gaming accelerator
12MB PCI Bus
STB

How can I best use these cards on a dual boot W2K/Linux system?

Are they designed to be used together?

Well, I think that the early voodoo series (voodoo 1 -> rush -> voodoo2) were 3d-only cards, and second, I also recall that the voodoo2 chipset can work in sli-mode (dual voodoo2-mode) only with another voodoo2 card, and not with any others...

Finally, as I said before, these are 3d-only cards so you need a 2d-capable card....

The Rush does 2d. They can be used together. I'm not aware of the level of linux support, so I cannot comment, though I suspect they will preform adequately.

I'd panned on using them only for web surfing, office apps, basically 2D only.
Should I use just the voodoo rush, both, or get something else?

I noticed a vid at Newegg that one customer had commented was excellent at 2D:

CardExpert GeForce2 MX 200 32MB SDRAM AGP - Retail - $45

Is that just one man's opinion?

I hear Nvidia has excellent Linux support.

Woohooo?. aVoodoo rush?

The Rush was hybrid Voodoo 3D chipset with a conventional 2D chipset on one card. Basically they took a voodoo card and a 2d card and threw it together. It was pretty wild and unconventional idea and if I remember correctly I had quite a few problems and didn?t stay in production very long. If you can get it too work it go ahead and use it as a 2d card if the image quality is expectable.

As for the GeForce MX they normally have pretty poor 2d quality so in that regard you can do allot better.
