I tried to find the new drivers on 3dfxgamers.com but they weren't there. Does anyone have a link to them? Thanks. :)

They didn't exactly work for me. Installed them, goes you have to reboot, I was like why sure. Windows loads, and it comes up with "your video settings are incorrect" or somethin like that. Then the display properties were opened. Right now its at 640x480x16, I choose something else, it says "you must reboot for changes to take affect" windows starts to shut down and get some gereral protection fault, hit a key and computer turns off. Turn it on same deal, settings incorrect.... so then I had to dl some beta drivers :( Their working now.

It still must be in VGA mode before running the install I think. A friend made the same mistake.

all I did was uninstall the 3dfx tools that were currently installed, and then ran the installer immediately, and it worked.

Ok I found them. What happened was I went to 3dfx's website first and then clicked on drivers. That gave me the 1.04.00 dirvers, which I already have. Thanks. :)

I'll try running a few benchmarks and see how it turns out, althought I only have a K6-3 so I don't know how much faster things can go.

P.S. This censorship thing is getting rediculous. I got a forbidden word when I tried to write 3df_.com. The same thing would happen with matrox. They really need to do something about this!

I just ran the installer while in 1280x1024x16, allowed the install program to uninstall the previous tools by itself and had no problems :)

Framerates.....I dunno, I don't care for a few fps difference.....

oooooh, there IS an LOD slider!!!! cool, can't wait to try it out! it's hidden in monitor/settings/advanced/3dfx advanced features!

i installed the new drivers for my voodoo 3, then fired up some unreal tournament, it was actin funny, but then i realized it was 80 degrees in my room and i have been busting blocks for rc5 for about 4 days straight, <cpu sizzling>

so i shut down the comp and rejoined the real world for a few minutes, then went back, and all was good, i think unreal is actually a little smoother now, but no big difference.

The menus do seem a lil different from the previous driver version, but other than that I don't see any difference in performance. However, I haven't done any timedemos since I got the new drivers.
As for dual monitor compatibility, even the default drivers that shipped with the card were compatible with my other CL Savage4 card.
And what's the deal with the LOD slider? What good does it do?

I'm downloading them now (on my 56k modem :() - I'll post some frame rate results for Quake 3 shortly. Comparing my current drivers and the new ones. I would do UT, but I don't have it...

The new drivers deliver !

I just checked out the new drivers and ran a couple of timedemos on UT and Q3. results as follows;

By changing the LOD you can dramatically raise your fps, although at the fastest/lowest detail setting Q3 got a bit washed out. But frame rates went up by 20 %. Great news for people on low end systems wanting a few more fps.

Ut at fastest/lowest detail went up by 10 %, still a significant margin and didn't get washed out, only slightly less detail.

Even better news is the fact that at slowest/highest detail, the quality is heaps better, in both Q3 and UT the picture was sharper and much more vibrant colours. And with only a marginal frame rate drop around 2 %.

I think these drivers really deliver and offer significant tweaks for all users.

Well done 3dfx !

I think LOD -8 looks weird....but it's probably because I have to adjust to it :) also, I see a noticable framerate hit.....I can just feel it when playing CS online for example.....

Here's a little bench I did with the new lod settings in Quake 3:

1024x768
Normal Settings

Max LOD setting: 37.4 fps
Lowest LOD setting: 47.3 fps

The lowest LOD setting looked horrible though - just like Q3 with textures turned right down. :(

Where is that slider again? I can't seem to find it.

Doesn't seem much different compared to the beta.

Open 3Dfx tools, and it's there in 3Dfx advanced features. The 3dfx advanced tools thingy should be in your system tray, but if it isn't it'll be 1st icon in your control panel.

heh no praise for me? oh well.

These are better then the ones I had last ( I think 1.03.05) becuase they offer alot more features, and are compatible with 800X600 for once!

I've not tried many benchmarks, but I just had 3DMARK 2000 going and I got ~1500 (I don't remember the exact number, I think it was 1500) on a K6-2 400 @420, Voodoo 3 2K not overclocked becuase I have heating problems right now.. need cooling fans!

It ran the demo a fair amount faster then before, partly becuase of my extra 20mhz since I last ran it.

As for the LOD settings, the -8 setting is for use if you have FSAA only. The Reverend did a article on this, and said -8 looks horrible, unless you have FSAA on, in that case it looks amazing. I think that's because all the jaggies appear with -8, and of course FSAA smooths it out, so you have a beautiful image..

Hmmn, I lost around 3FPS in quake3 640x480 lowest settings going from my previous drivers to these new ones, but that's with the default LOD. Haven't done any benchmarking with higher LOD settings yet.

Woah, at LOD bias 8, I gained around 7FPS, from 52.xFPS to 59.xFPS. That's also around a 4FPS gain from my previous drivers. However, everything was washed out in quake3, boy does it look bad. At LOD bias 4 I get 58+FPS and better image quality, about halfway from no bias and bias 8. I guess I have to live with that...my system's too slow for eye candy :(
