<< 3dfx is concentrating on maximizing revenues while we ride out our component shortage and executing on future product releases. For the near future, this means making sure the 5500 series is successful. I do not think it is any secret that giving out dates prematurely has hurt our company in the past. The V5 6000 product is in development. We will be releasing the V5 6000 this summer. When the release date solidifies, we will make sure everyone knows what it is.

Good enough for me. I have a 5500, and I'll wait patiently for the 6000.

As if I won't be replacing it with a G800 later this fall, and a Rampage this winter. :)

It amazes me that it can take so long to release a product that uses the same drivers and chips as the V5 5500.....oh well

I think they are having trouble with the quad processor architecture. I mean, it's difficult for companies to develop dual processor systems, and very difficult to develop 4 processor systems. Now try to build something like that onto a video card.

Fireball,

Read the quote. They are having problems getting silicon from TSMC to make the boards. Because of this they are choosing to devote all the silicon they get to 5500 until all the demand for 5500 is satisfied, then they will start making the 6000. Apparently 3dfx is now on TSMC's sh!tlist and isn't getting the wafer allocations they need.

The 6000 is a waste of money. Your going to get at best double the performance of the 5500, which will be only 25-50% faster than a GeForce 2. And your going to pay like $600 for it.

Instead invest in a new processor and some RAM. It will give you a better performance boost in the long run.

And besides, stuff is going to come out the end of this year that will probably blow it away.

I would like to know how much power it will need to run?btw this is a serious question,if you have only a 200/235w psu this could be a problem.

the V5 6k has it's own dedicated external 100 W PS.... the only thing you have to worry about is all the heat from those damn vsa-100's!

and room :D I seriously don't have so much space.....unless I can let it slide in between my harddrives......that would get too hot though :)

By the time the Voodoo 5 6000 gets here, G800 and NV20 will be right around the corner;)

Room and heat would be the things I'd be worried about. If 3dfx designs the 6000 like the prototype with that 1x4 chip layout, it's gonna be an awfully long card that even the largest of cases would have trouble accommodating. Let's just hope for that 2x2 design.

Furthermore, there's a lot of things that I would rather spend $600 on.

Hey IceStorm,

Mind sending a bit of that doh my way? I wouldn't mind a G800 and a Rampage either. ;)

No. It's my money. All mine! ALL MINE!

I spend waaaaaay too much on my Pee Cees. :)

I'm probably replacing the G400 MAX with a G800 (whatever the high-performance G800 part is), moving the V5-5500 out into I don't know what yet to make room for the 6000, and then if/when Rampage comes out, may replace the 6000 with it.

The G400's DRI drivers are coming along nicely, it seems. I really want to see DualHead support for the card, then it goes into the Linux box. The V5-5500 was because I just didn't want to wait for the 6000. I _may_ sell it, but I doubt it. It'll probably go in a relative's machine. :)

Sucks for cards this year. I was hoping to only have to upgrade twice. Seems four times for this year. :)

The 6000 will be fast but:

1) Too big
2) Too expensive
3) Too much heat
4) Requires it's own power supply.
5) Too much noise - four fans.

Basically it seems like a poor design. (This is coming from a Voodoo owner.)

I see it is once again time for the daily reality check for the "anti-3dfx" trolls ...

<< 3dfx is concentrating on maximizing revenues while we ride out our component shortage >>

If people would take one minute to just think about this statement, they would see the correct reasoning behind it. TSMC shorted 3dfx on wafers they had already contracted for, so with fewer chips to work with, it only makes sense for 3dfx to use them in 5500's and below, instead of in the 6000. That way they can produce at least twice as many finished boards. Business-wise, it's a no-brainer. And as I have warned before, don't think nVidia is immune from the TSMC problem. TSMC is unable to completely fill orders for nearly all of its customers, and DSP's and other teleco-related chips are their cash cows, not graphics chips.

If TSMC gets the choice of delivering to nVidia or 3dfx, I think that would be an easy choise.
Not that they care about which card is better, but nVidia buys more, easy maths.
The bigger a customer you are, the more valued a customer you are.

Then nvidia and 3dfx are not big enough for tsmc. Has midnight stated,"DSP's and other teleco-related chips are their cash cows, not graphics chips. "
I think they would be more worried about their really big customers.

Finally a Video Card Company comes out with a card that is 'better' than most systems! It will take a gig or better to make the V5500 perform to the max. Not many here, or elsewhere for that matter, claim to have a comp that fast, but finally a company comes out with a card that's not obsolete before it's arrival and all I see here are gripes!
Maybe you 'Newbies' don't remember paying over $200 for an ATI Xpert98! Or the $300 range for V2 SLI!

Well, I remember. The 6000 will be the ultimate video card. The question is....Are you ready? [$$$]
