Freaks. guess they want one video card company around with no competition so the prices will sky rocket even more. Kinda like Intel used to be before Amd came out with a good cpu.

Its not old news its INCORRECT NEWS!!!! 3dfx is going back to the business model that they used to rule. Out of business? NO!!!! Changing business? YES!!!! Of all the video card technology on the horizon right now 3dfx's looks to be the most promising. So anyone who cheers because a company that makes great technology is going out of business needs their heads checked.

More competition = LOWER PRICES, MORE INNOVATION, MORE CHOICES

Stop and think about it for a second. And I dread the day that 3dfx goes out of business. Of all the 3d tech companies out there 3dfx makes the most stable chips on the market. I have yet to find one game I cannot play with my 3dfx card. That with just ONE set of drivers. Not one for this game and one for that game. Ohh and this with no tweaks, no tearing, and no incompatibilites. If the rest of the market had this kind of stability the world would be a better place. At least alot less four letter words being used when trying to get your games to work.

dfloyd,
What are you smoking, 'cause it must be great.
1 set of drivers my arse.
Even Alf (STB/3dfx Customer control damage rep), acknowledges that it is not possible, and he states that the position 3dfx takes is that as long as "A" driver will allow you to do one thing, and "B" driver allows you to do other things that "A" driver can not, then there is no problem, as you can run what you want, provided you have the correct driver loaded at the correct time. For myself, the best drivers were the ones that came on the CD from March '99, although I did have to put up with a lot of problems, just less with that version than others. At least I found comfort in the fact that I was not alone, and that most people had problems wit the V3, and just learned to live with the card like I did. After more than 18 months with my V3 3k (same as yours), I gave up with dealing with the absolutely worst driver support since Alf was with the old STB. Moving to a GeForce2 GTS was the best move I've done since moving from my STB Velocity 128 to Voodoo2. As a system builder, the 3dfx V3 2000 "was" my card of choice, but it was very embarrassing to have constantly tell customers to keep checking and downloading the latest drivers until they find one that will do what they want. Now that Glide is a non-factor, same goes for 3dfx. A non-factor.

Unlike my 3dfx V3 3000, with the GeForce2 GTS card, I have yet to find one game I cannot play with just ONE set of drivers. Not one for this game and one for that game like my 3dfx card required. Ohh and this with no tweaks, no tearing, and no incompatibilites. If the rest of the market had this kind of stability the world would be a better place. At least alot less four letter words being used when trying to get your games to work. If you are still messing with 3dfx drivers, you don't know what stability actually is until you've seen the light of GeForce2.

RobsTV, your experience is 180 degrees opposite of the vast majority of people out there.

glad you're happy with your GTS, but I loved your last comment

"If you are still messing with 3dfx drivers, you don't know what stability actually is until you've seen the light of GeForce2"

OMFG, I think I just wet myself from giggling so hard.

But seriously, glad you're happy with your GTS.

The 3dfx cards have always worked for me and every single person I know quite easily. Previously, you would want to download the wickedGL for a few games (Q2-engine games). Now, that's not even an issue. Use the latest 3dfx released drivers for your version of DX, and you're good. Not sure why you had so many problems.

Just out of curiosity, what games were you having problems with? Only issues I've found with the 5500 so far is Nocturne (which has been solved by a game patch) and Revolt @ 1600x1200x32 (I prefer FSAA myself, so this was a complete non-issue)

RobsTV,

Your not just a minority, you are the first person I have EVER heard say this. The 3dfx drivers are ROCK SOLID (Although that is an understatement as rock is not near as solid as my 3dfx drivers). I have never seen ONE game that I could not play with my 3dfx drivers from the ones that came with the cd on. Not one. That includes a list of around 500 games I have tried from betas, demos, and full games. If you were having problems then you had some other kind of conflict via a irq or something else. Give me one example of a problem. Not a theoretical one like driver a vs driver b. Everyone knows that Nivida has many problems that can only be fixed with using one driver set for one game and another for a different game. Or at least I have seen it posted probably 20 times myself in this newsgroup and thats without even looking. And no I am not a 3dfx zealott. I recently ordered a ATI Radeon card. But as far as stability goes NOTHING touches 3dfx. I bought the ATI for price/features. Now that you can get V5500 so cheap I wish I had waitied.

Some of the games off the top of my head!!

Diablo, Diablo II, Quake, Quake II, Quake III, UT, Unreal, Half Life, Tony Hawk Pro Skater II, Baldurs Gate II, Tribes, Asherons Call, Rogue Spear, Thief II, Finaly Fantasy VII, Heretic II, Need for Speed III, Freespace, Homeworld, Blood 2, Soldier of Fortune, Star Wars Racer, AOE II, Deus Ex, Ultra HLE. Need I say more???

RobsTV:

I agree with RoboTECH and dfloyd. I'm no 3dfx lover but I give credit when its due. The fact of the matter is that 3dfx's drivers and hardware are extremely stable and work well. nVidia's Detonators can't even compare to 3dfx's drivers in terms of stability and lack of bugs.

I also don't understand your driver problems with games. The only thing I can think of is maybe your talking about MiniGL, but ever since 3dfx have been shipping a full OpenGL ICD those problems are gone.

I have just recently returned my GF2 MX and gone back to my Voodoo 3 partially because of the reasons I have outlined above.

3dfx drivers are rock stable. As far as i am concerned Nvidia's drivers look less stable since there are always "leaked" versions and you always have a ton of driver updates all the tme(good if you have a problem with curent drivers but if you are fine it's just a waste of time). Im not saying anyone's drivers suck but I have never had any problems with any versions of any 3dfx drivers I have ever used.
