im currently planning on building a workstaion for 3d. was wondering if this is a good setup?

ASUS KGPE-D16 Dual Socket G34 AMD SR5690 SSI EEB 3.61 Dual 8/12 Core AMD Opteron 6000 series Server Motherboard

2 AMD Opteron 6128 Magny-Cours 2.0GHz 8 core

2 500gb wd black cav

8x1 gig sticks ecc ddr3

ati firegl v7600

corsair 750w powersupply

OS- linux or vista 64bit.

I would install 2 x 2GB DIMMs per CPU, rather than 4 x 1GB modules.
Are you using registered ECC or unbuffered ECC?

I would forget about Vista 64bit and go with Windows 7 64bit.
You can later build a dual-boot with some Linux distro if you find you have a need for it.

Double check the MB compatibility of the Corsair 750W before you make your purchase.

k then dual boot win 7 64/linux setup it is! i was thinking unbuffered but i also have not really looked into the difference between unbuffered and registered.i figured since it uses quad channel it would be better to utilize it but if 2x2 is better then thats what ill do.yeah i didnt even think about the compatability of the psu thx ill look into that rightnow.

Unbuffered ECC is a little cheaper than the registered versions, but not a lot.

BTW, Your configuration is probably Super OverKill.
Is the sky your budget limit?
Specifically, what programs do you plan on running?

3dsmax 2009 and blender for linux. and my q9550 might not be up to the task as its taking longer and longer to render the farther i go.but i also dont have a nvidia/ati workstation card in it.as far as my budget i dont wanna push past over $2000.i feel i wont need it till september cause the q9550 is still doing ok for most rendering.

i might consider trowning a quadro fx 1800 in the intel and seeing how that floats befor upgrading to a higher system.just dont wanna spend extra money if its not going to make a big improvment.

Your component list and your budget aren't compatible. :thumbsdown😱_O

its i priced it close to $2200 which is only 200 over the budget and thats without monitor but i wont need a major monitor and it can wait cause i already have 2. so total will probly be 2500 which isnt bad since i can buy the monitor later so 2200 for now.
