I'm trying to cut a cylinder out of another cylinder, but I dont want the end result to just be missing faces... I want it to be as if the first cylinder were solid (i.e., create new faces along the intersection of the cylinders). a boolean compoud doesn't seem to do the trick with either subtraction or cuts: subtraction results in a hole that shows out th back (since the material isn't 2-sided), and cut doesn't do anything for "refine" or "split", and does the same thing as subtraction for "remove inside".

any ideas? this is 3dsmax R4.

bump. anyway... i figured out that subtraction seems to work for the first few things I subtract, then stops working. Came up with a workaround, but I still want to know if there is a better way htat would allow me to subtract complex things from other complex things

All the booleans in 3D Studio MAX usually are comlete bitches. Sometimes it helps to make sure both objects are about the same complexity, and to make sure both objects are collapsed to editable meshes.

You could try posting on the 3dsmax support forum at support.discreet.com if you need more help.
