On the EA UK Battlefield 3 forums, 3D spotting is shown not to be desirable in polls. However, supporters of 3D spotting respond by saying that those forums are full of PC only players, to discredit the sampling as it doesn't consider Console players. And so, I thought this, a console subforum, would be the right place to run a poll for the purpose of crosschecking against a PC-centric forum's results.

3d Spotting is of course the system where one player identifies enemies to the rest of his team and it is accomplished by a triangle that appears over the enemy's head. It's called 3D because instead of appearing on a 2 dimensional minimap like Battlefield 2, it shows up on the main game window and can be seen regardless of distance, and through walls, mountains, through anything. Undeniably, it is a communication aid. But it is also an aiming aid, especially if the target is on the other side of soft cover that won't stop bullets, but technically you would not be able to see the target except for the triangle. The BF2 system let you know roughly where enemies are, but did not show you where to shoot, you still had to locate them with your own eyes.

And so the poll is, do you prefer
Full on 3D spotting as per BC2
2D minimap(aka radar) spotting
3D spotting but with fixes to balance it
No spotting at all

I don't really mind 3D spotting. What I don't like more is the death cam that shows you where the person who killed you was located.

That's actually a worse problem; but from all indications DICE is not going to force it on us in BF3, if that were not so I'd have grouped them together. Plus BF3 is going to have other things like jets that BC2 didn't, so jets will be raping 3D spots, and suppression, you'll be able to suppress people you can't really see.

I don't like "3D" spotting. I like the spotting in BF2 more because the spotting in BC2 makes it too easy to know exactly where the enemy is.

What I don't understand is why the 3D spotting system allows that red triangle over people's heads to stay there even 5-10 seconds after they've moved behind a solid object. If they changed the system so that if your line of sight with the target is obstructed by something, the triangle disappeared, I'd be on board.

Disclaimer: I only play this game on the PC. I'm not sure how this would affect console gameplay, if differently at all.

I like it the way it is. It forces people to help their team out in locating people who may not have a mic. Being able to pinpoint enemies help with the teamwork that the BF games are supposed to have over others. Take it away and you just further shove BF into the "lone wolf" style play we see in COD.

Yes, but 2D spotting accomplishes the same thing without being an actual aiming aid. Teamwork is cheapened when it's just a triangle shooter, the aiming aid of the spot goes far beyond teamwork into a simple SHOOT HERE sign.

I should point out that the anti-3D spotting community would be perfectly happy if 3D spotting could be turned off in BF3, that is, turned off by the owners/renters of a server, without having to set the server to hardcore. It's technically possible to turn it off individually in BC2 without hardcore, BUT even though that's only 1 thing you changed, it makes your server show up in the hardcore server browser results only, and for that reason, some servers that would have turned it off, don't, in order to keep their population high. And thus, the people who don't want 3D spotting but don't want to play hardcore either, have no places to go.

No spotting. Hell even the damage 'blinker' that shows when you score a hit is a silly idea.
