Wow, awesome!

http://www.instructables.com/id/3D-Printed-Camera-OpenReflex/?ALLSTEPS

The Open Reflex, a research about desktop 3D printing, open design and hacking. 100% Open-Source! Feel free to copy, understand, improve then share again !

The OpenReflex is an Open-Source analog camera with a mirror Viewfinder and an awesome finger activated mechanic shutter (running ~ 1/60°s). What's more, it's compatible with any photographic lens with custom mount ring.

All the pieces easily printable on an recent RepRap-like ABS 3D-printer without using support material ! Everything should print in less than 15h and anyone should be able to assemble it within 1h. All parts are separate ( Film receiver, Shutter and Viewfinder ) to simplify builds and modifications.

The source files are available under the CreativeCommon By-Sa license, fell free to modify them if you want a new feature, and don't forget to share your improvements on the web 😉

I hate to be a killjoy, but this thing costs $30 in parts, and you could just buy a perfectly serviceable film SLR on eBay that would work much better for that amount.

"3D-printing" is growing in hype

I think it'll get there. At my last job, we got a 3D printer that did plastic & rubber, so we could make gasket & shift-boot mockups. It was really cool! And I just saw a demo for 3D metal printing, plus there are multiple colors available on the new 3D plastic printers. botObjects has a 5-color PLA system coming out that does full color as well:

Plus there's other funky stuff, like 3D food printers, which would be awesome when combined with stuff like the Soylent project.

I don't understand why this is cool. If anything you're better off with a $30 Holga camera. There's a whole hipster branch of photography that is into the light leak effect and shitty optics. If you actually have decent lenses you aren't going to want them on that piece of shit.

Wow I can't believe how much hype 3D printing has gotten, when I first heard about it I was POSITIVE that it won't go anywhere and bam! I haven't had a week lately without some 3D printing news article on my feeds

I'm just a pragmatist. If your hobby is making things with a 3D printer, this is awesome. If your hobby is photography, this is waste of time, money and energy.

what makes this cool is that it can be done... not that it is a good application of the technology... maybe one day with people constantly pushing the envelope it will be though.

It's really only cool if you don't realize that a camera is just a box with a hole in it. Look up shoebox camera or pinhole camera.

about all i realistically want from 3D printing would be the ability to make spare parts for old cameras.
