just a general question really... i've recently started with the first class in a series of 3d modeling classes (using 3ds max). it seems to be really laggy and i'm thinking its my video although wanted to check first before i went and started to replace parts.

2x 1.4 tbird
1024 corsair registered pc2100
gf4 ti4600 128mb (dual dvi > dual samsung 191t's)
tyan s2460

i've honestly never seen anything so laggy in my life, it's not so horrible that i can't work with it, but it definatly makes things difficult.

what do you experienced users think?

edit; modlers ftw :Q

aye it's set for direct 3d.

i guess i really didn't notice the first couple of times, but now that i actually have some peice of work when i do a quick render it's a really low resolution image... imo it's starting to look more and more like it's the video card, anyone?

I use Maya don't know about 3D max, but the render resolution is just a setting is it not?

it's not just the render resolution...

when i start working with stuff that has a high poly count it starts getting laggy

I'm not a Max user but I know switching from OpenGL or to Direct 3D has a huge affect on your performance. I have a computer worse than yours and Max doens't really get that laggy (even though i haven't gone that high in poly count)

How many polys is your scene?

it's a geosphere... :p

changing to OGL did make a difference, but there is still lag.

from what i understand there is a patch for max 5 that adds support for dx9... anyone know antyhing about that?

Yeah...software is the way to go. I only use hardware rendering for particles like sparks.
