Game Tests 2 and 3 are DX8.1 but use Pixel Shader 1.4, which is not used by any games we are aware of and will not be to our knowledge. Game 4 is a hybrid of DX8/DX9. It is these four tests that determine the overall score. Only one game test in this benchmark DirectX 9 and then only partially.

In closing, Kyle has informed me that Hard|OCP will not be using the overall 3DMark03 score to evaluate video cards.

I'm sure they will change that in the future.

Sorry for the naked post above.

I think the new 3dmark will not be used until Nvidia has a card that can run the tests.

Please read the reviews first before you post. Nvidia's GFFX beat the 9700Pro using the latest drivers.

I doubt that. Kyle is known to be pretty firm in his convictions (to say the least). IME, if he doesn't like something, he says so and sticks to his word.

Vic,

The FX is not available yet. It is not being sold anywhere or do you have a news flash for us.

Getting back to the benchmark. What's the deal with the CPU test? I can understand making it difficult for today's CPUs to give room for growth, but dropping below 1fps in parts on a P4 2.53GHz CPU? That's seems rather ridiculous. Looking at Rage3D's review above it doesn't look like the CPU is even exclusively being taxed. Why is the CPU score 25% lower on a Radeon 8500 vs a 9700Pro using an identically configured P4 2.4GHz system? The CPU test at least appears to need a bit more work.

Hmm... good point.
However:
- The FX will be out shortly (I have no plans on buying one though if it is as loud as has been said).
- There are no DX9 games out anywhere either. Nor will there be anytime too soon.
- 3dMark (all versions) is a synthetic benchmark which has no bearing on real-life gaming that I think too many people take too seriously.
- How many people run out and get a 9700Pro in order to have the latest DX9 card and then play nothing but CS? :p

Vic,

You are right on about DX9. I have a Geforce 3 and an Ati 8500 and I am totally satisfied with both cards now. They run all my games just fine.

I think Rage3D "does" the most detailed and interesting REview with an outstanding "overview" of the benchmark.

:D

("insider" joke, Adul) :p

Beyond3D is also technically pretty good . . . however, HardOCP looks to be in "over his head".
